How do I identify if I have a VIDEO CARD?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Can someone please tell me how I can determine what my video capability is (short of taking the lid off my PC box)?

Upon start-up, in the DOS window before WIN98, it reads "4MB VGA memory"

Does this mean I have a VIDEO CARD? Or is it simply an allotment of memory to my colour monitor?

(I'm trying to resolve game-software compatibility issues.)

Thank you... from a newbie,

Eric

You'll first have to tell us what the specifications of your computer are, 'cause I guess you want it mainly for games, but with a 4MB GC, you can forget about playing recent games, so probably you'll have to buy a new one like GeForce4 Ti or Radeon 9500.

Thanks for the reply Azzi.

P1 225 Mhz MMX
128 Mb RAM
4 Gig HD
Windows 98
52x24x52x CD-RW

It's a rebuilt PC used mostly for internet, and I'm happy playing old games when not on-line.

Thanks,

Eric

its fine for playing dos and early win98 games. to find out what card you have, go into computer properties, and device manager. double click on the display adapter and it should tell you in general what it is. for specifics, youd have to crack the case more than likely.

"SiS 5597/5598"

That's what appears under Display Adapter. I'm going to do a search to see if I can get anywhere with this info.

Thank you redwench for your time and effort.

Wow, P1.
I feel for ya, but if ya use for just internet thats understandable.

Ya could also use sisoft sandra to tell you your video card information.

The SiS 5597/5598 is integrated, which probably means the 4mb of video RAM is actually borrowed from your regular RAM.
