My DVD Player = fubar'ed
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Well, after trying to watch a DVD for the first time, I realize the player does not work. It seems to be a dirver problem, however, I have reformatted my computer at least 15 times, aka: i'm a pro at it, and it has never done this before. I dunno who makes the DVD player, as it came with my comp (AST). But like i said this has never happened before (with needing drivers and all), and while screwing around with it, I made it think it is a normal CD ROM drive, or thats what it says in my Device Manager. What do i do?
Thanks In Advance,
Maverick

Okay, you said you tried watching a DVD for the first time .... did you get to watch it, or did you encounter the problem while you were trying to watch it? Does this mean you have never watched a DVD on that computer ever?
The drivers are dependent on the type of DVD drive you have. Since you mentioned you do not know what brand it is, then you might not be using the correct drivers for it.
To check what type of DVD drive you have, you may need to download mvSysInfo, and run it from your computer .... take a look at what DVD drive type it spits out...
Also, what DVD software are you using to play the DVD? It may also be a problem with your DVD software player, and may need to run diagnostics or drive detection...
Post more details on your system specs and operating system...

Ok, lemme go thru this in a step by step fashion =)

I have watched it before I reformatted. Note, i have reformatted many times and it has worked every time.

I have watched DVD's on this comp a lot. It has been a really reliable player...till now.

The file is corrupted

Normally I use Zoran Soft DVD, but after reformatting this comp for the last time, i noticed that the factory driver/software CD is scratched horribly. Comp wont read it. So i just downloaded all normal (video, audio, modem, etc) off of the internet, and got a few various DVD Software Players, but I came to the conclusion that, that was not the problem, because I went thru like 4 players, and some I have used before and I know they work.

Yay! I love doing this
- Pentium III 450
- 192mB 100mhz RAM
- 4x4x32 CD-RW
- 8x DVD Rom (Yes, it is ancient, but used to be reliable )

Have you been reformatting to try and fix the problem? Or is that not because of your player?
Try uninstalling everything related to that player. Remove the drivers & DVD program. Reboot your computer and have the drivers you have previously used handy. After that, install one of the programs you know that works.
Post back & good luck. If all else fails, I guess you could reformat again.

I agree.

Also...you do have codec's installed right? Most DVD playing software doesn't have it ... some do some don't, just wondering if that's what it is...heh

No, my HDD was getting a little clogged up, so i started over =)
To All Of The Other Comments:
Like I said in the first post, this has never happened before (the many previous times I have wiped my HDD). In the Device Manager tab, it shows, my DVD ROM as a CD-Rom, and this is a result of me playing with it, trying to get it fixed. I feel that the mySysInfo would shed some light on the problem, but that file is corrupted. Can someone please post again - then i will go and find some drivers, and post data back here =)

...in all 3 of my machines with DVDROM's it shows up as a CDROM in the device manager.

Well in all the time of me having my DVD ROM (which has been awhile it has always said DVD ROM 450, or something to that extent.)
Anyhow, anyone have a 'non-corrupted' version of mySysInfo?

I just uploaded v1.25 of MVsoft PC Information.
If should now work, but if it doesn't, then go to their website (http://idb.newmail.ru/eng/programs.html).

Ok, it is a nice proggy but it didnt help
Under the CDROM devices it merely lists 'WPI CDRW-4424(I: ) (CD-Rom Drive)(J: )' still showing it as a CDROM drive and not DVDROM. What now?

Unless you can make it work with the current drivers, then you may need to ask the people woh made your computer on what brand it is, or open up the computer and try to see any marks, stickers or labels that denote what brand it is.
If it's not possible to find out what DVD drive it is, then you may be able to save yourself a lot of time and grief if you just buy a new DVD drive...

Ok, I will crack open the case later today. It has to have a brand engraved on it - just logical. I'll post the info back here =)

Maverick, sadly, not all hardware is labeled with the manufacturers ID. If it is a cheap OEM part, then there may not be any identifying labels/marks on it. I do hope you find something on it though.

Ok, I popped open the case, and took a good look at the DVD Rom itself (its tummy). Come to find out it is a Korean made DVD ROM in an AST Computer. That may explain it all, or that may not explain anything. There is a website URL on the DVD Rom Casing that had the address -
http://www.dvs.co.kr/
So I went there and downloaded the drivers, and NOT the firmware update. I assure you, I have NEVER done this before, never been to this site, or anything. It has always worked fine. I just installed the drivers, but now I must reboot. I will post results back after I reboot.

Ok, no that did not work. However, like I said in a post above (way above), it did not used to say Generic CDROM Drive under Device Manager, it would say DVS DVD ROM 442 or something, which is EXACTLY what it is. I played with it and accidentally installed a driver for a generic CD ROM that Windows did by itself, and it all went downhill from there. The thing that may fix it, is is there ANYWAY to delete it from Device Manager period, then re-add that one device from scratch using the one driver that is correct which i have never used before in at least 7 reformats...? Please let me know. I feel that it is only a misunderstand by Windows of what the device actually IS. However, the real, correct drivers will not overrite the Generic CD ROM Driver, this I need to know if it is possible to start that device over from scratch. Please let me know ASAP. Thanks for your help.

Ok, have you tried to delete the DVD ROM drive in your device manager and then rebooting for windows to re-detect it. Have you tried to double click on the DVD and then selecting the driver tab…click on update driver. When this comes on…select have disk and pop in your driver disk (you do have one don’t you?). If not, see if you can select to choose from a driver list. I take it that you have formatted your HDs before and reinstalled your drivers with no problems. Thus, chances are that the proper driver is found on your OS. If all else fails, you can reformat and start once again to see if this will jostle windows into recognizing it.

Starting from scratch sounds like the best (and probably only) solution from where I'm sitting...
