fixing an imac

alright, so i'm a big pc person, but my sister has an Imac that she wants me to fix, and i haven't figured it out yet. What caused the problem was a power outage, and then, when she tried to boot it, it shows this small folder in the center of the screen with a flashing question mark and OS smiley face.

She's running OS 9 i think by the way.

Here's what I've done so far:

-reset the pram several times from boot

-used an OS 9.1 setup disc to boot and repair the drive. when i booted, it loaded all the extensions, and then told me the hard drive was invalid, and asked me if I wanted to initialize it. I said no, and then the cd apeared on the desktop with nothing else. I went into the cd, went to disc first aid, verified the disc, and it found a bunch of problems. I repaired them, and it fixed all but one, which was a mounting error. I tried repairing again, and this time it fixed all the errors and said the disc was okay. THen all of my sisters desktop icons and her files apeared on the desktop. Assuming it was fixed, i rebooted (holding the mouse button as I booted to ject the cd), but i got the same message.

-I then tried using disc first aid from the hard drive thinking the difference between a 9.1 repair and a 9 repair might be the problem, but it didn't work either.

suggestions?

You know that I do not know anything about Macs, but it kinda ironic that it smiles when its broken isnt it?

Ahh good old Macs. Its been a while since I've worked on one, but the problem your having was quite common.

Basically your going to have to do a reload on OS 9. The repair won't fixe the issue, its just going to keep happening.

The other issue with this is that your sister is going to loose any data she had saved on her hard drive. You may be able to save her data if you can get it to repair and boot back to the desktop with her stuff on it.

How old is the unit? Some of the final lines of iMacs had a 3 year warranty instead of a 1 year and you might be able to get it fixed under that.

Was the unit plugged into a surge protector?

Hey guys, fyi, i fixed this problem over a month ago. Sorry about that, i made it a new thread, rather than closing the current one. My bad.

And I didn't lose all the data Tecil, as you'll see if you read the second post.

Good call, I would have never thought to try that.

I always hated iMacs, not because they were Apple, but because they were the biggest pieces of junk to work on.

The two most common components to go out on them were the A/V board, and the CD/DVD drives, both of which are a pain to remove/replace.

Now G4s and above were great to work on. Just as simple as a PC. It was the OS that could make it difficult sometimes.
