Random sound loss

system specs.......
motherboard......K7S5A using SIS 735 chipset
cpu.....Athlon XP1800+
ram.......512mb ddr pc2700
video........Gforce4 Ti4800se 128mb memory
sound........Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer
hard drive.......Maxtor 80gb 7200 rpm
OS........Windows XP home SP1

The above specs belong to my boy's system, which i recently upgraded by adding the above sound card and video card. The upgrade also included moving all of his old system into a new Chieftec case, along with a new slk-800 heatsink and Stealth fan.

My original intention was to format the hard drive and bring it up like a new system, but after rebuilding the thing the other night, i brought it up with no conflicts. Originally, it was using an old Gforce MX card and integrated audio. i disabled the integrated audo in bios before bringing the system up for the first time, installed the drivers for the audio and video, and had no problems at all. After installing the drivers for the two new pieces of hardware, i downloaded the latest drivers for both, and that's where i am currently.

Here's the problem. The computer seems to be experiencing random loss of sound. From a fresh boot, the sound works fine, but after playing several games, it seems to loose the sound for everything. The only current cure is a restart. I have looked through all of the system information to see if there are conflicts going on with the new sound card, but all of the information about the sound card, indicates everything is working properly.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi,
not sure if it is the same but I had to reinstall Win XP on my machine and then reinstall all the drivers etc. I also have a creative soundblaster audigy card and the onboard sound disabled. After I reinstalled the creative drivers the sound came on initially but just disappeared after a short time. I could not figure out what the problem was until I noticed AC97 audio codec drivers listed as installed under Add/Remove Programs in the control panel. I must have installed them with the mobo drivers. I removed them and the sound came back on after a restart and has not gone away again.
Your problem might be different but it might be worth having a look

Good luck!
