Good Web Host?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Darky!

Well, it seems my sites no longer on TG webspace, wich doesn't reall bother me, since wargy changed the FTP user name and pass a long time before it was taken down, for some reason unknown to me (probably because I never worked on it because I was addicted to EQ and all my spair time went there).

Anyway, now, the search begins for a new webhost, preferably a good one with CGI bin and all that good stuff, since im going to get vBulletin or UBB or something that requires CGI bin (even though i know jack about CGI, i figure i could just have the smart people who i buy it from install it).

So, i need, a CGI bin, lotsa space, domain name, and ummm, other thingys that are really nice.

Any suggestions? URL's are nice

Are you looking for a free webhost or a paid one? Coz I can recommend some paid ones:

F5Hosting - my current webhost ... excellent features and really personable customer service
Host Rocket - very cheap plans, great features
AllWebCo - my previous webhost, good features, very fast server
LiquidWeb - great features, great hosting plans

Webhosts to avoid - CiHost, Interland and Hostpro (I've had BAD experiences with em).

By the way, vBulletin doesn't require a CGI-BIN, it only requires that the server supports MySQL and PHP. All of the above support it except AllWebCo. UBB requires a CGI-BIN, though ... if you don't mind a great deal of tweaking and customizing, I'd recommend vBulletin - it's faster, uses less server resources, and just looks better, not to mention it's cheaper...

If you are looking for free webhosts, you won't have much options, since they don't offer as good features as the paid ones (of course).

Check this site - it's a good resource for finding the best webhost for you:

Would defently be paid, i've been with many free servers, but theres normally a bandwidtrh limit, content rules, no cgi, and such.

If i do get vBulletin, is it easy to "tweak" and stuff? hehe, im no expert on this stuff, as you can tell =(

I know HTML and Java though!!! =D

If you know decent HTML, CSS and javascript, it would be no problem to tweak vbulletin ... the template files are pretty straightforward, and the only thing you need is HTML knowhow and common sense However, there are a LOT of template files, so customizing it is a pretty arduous task if you want it to look exactly as you want it to look (I spent about 3-5 days just customizing the vbulletrin templates to get "this" kind of look).

UBB is a lot easier to tweak though, but to get it to work and function like vbulletin, you would need to incorporate a ton of hacks and modifications ... vbulletin already has most of the hacks incorporated

BTW laggy, if i do get one of those, say that f5 thingy, and theres a referal form, whom do i put down? Laggy? heh

Ok, so i get theis f5 hoster thing, and then, does that come with the .com adress if i get the platnium plan, or is there like, someplace else i have to go to regster the thingy, i know theres like yourname.com and registe.com, but just wanna make sure, don't like diving into thing head first...

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Well, with most webhosts, they do the domain name registration for you, but with F5Hosting, they allow you to do it yourself (altho they can register it for you, I think).

You can register your domain name at Network Solutions, and then later just enter the DNS info that the webhost will send you via email, so that the domain name will point to the webhost's server. If you want I can help you register your domain name (it's pretty straightforward, and I've done it almost a hundred times, hehee).

First thing you gotta do is register the domain name first, and pay for it online. Once that is secured, I can help you point that domain name to the server

Alright then, I'll probably register it tomorrow and the host thingy, and... stuff...

I'll post here sometime tomorrow when i do.

Ok, i decided im gonna do this.
Now, domain name picking mite be a problem. my previous domain ( www.darkintelligence.com ) was stolen from me by namezero.com, and it won't be availible to buy throguh somone else until somtime next year, and I promissed myself i'd never have anything to do with namezer.com again, ever.

So, i was thinking of a few other possibilitys, like pherhaps www.darkintel.net , intel, beeing short for intelligence, only problem beeing with that is, i don't want a multi-billion dollar lawsuit filed against me by intel, cause i sure as hell can't afford that.

Any ideas on a good adress? =)

Have you ever used Ikonboard? If so, how would you rate it for "hacking" and overall usage?

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Well, I haven't really used it as a forum solution in any of the sites I made, but I heard that it's a great forum script and very customizable. I know that DemonBob is using it for his site, System Overload, so you may wanna ask him. The new IB3 beta contains a chockful of features from previous hacks, which eliminates most of the hacking that went into IB2.

I am currently in the process of writing a forum script review, and iKonboard is one of the 4 test boards in it. It'll be done before the end of this month, so watch out for it

Hey, I may have an additional answer to your question. = ) I like using webaxxs.net simply because it's very reliable, always up, and I've never had any problems with it what soever. any other questions, you can send em to webmaster@tonybear.com.

Hehe as laggy say I am useing it. ANd have recently upgraded to the beta version of ibv3 it is a good forums script. And runs smoothly. Even the version of ib2 was good for a free board. ikonboard 3 offers almost all the features of vbulletin and runs pretty damn fast, also while offering features that vbullettin and even UBB do not have. It is also very customizable. Everything can be customized. On a side note it is very easy to install and the support at the ikonboard forums are great. Keep in mind that ib3 is still in beta in the moment and has a few bugs. But the full version is planned for relaese in a few weeks.

Some demo ib3's:

ikonboard.com forums: http://forums.ikonboard.com
/ikonboard.cgi
My site: http://forums.systemoverload.net/ikonboard.cgi

Some demo ib2's:

I dunno if this would be a good solutions, but I just found out that dark-intelligence.com, dark-intellect.com and darkintellect.com are all available... You may wanna register one of those through Network Solutions as soon as possible...

Ohhh, intelect, yummy, nice idea... ill just have to wait until I find out what going to happen with my processor. Im not sure if ASUS ill refund the money i spent for the chip, or if the retailer will refund it (or better yet, gimme a new one), or if AMD will. Im still sending emails and the like, but more then likely, they'll clame it was my fault, and i'll wind up beeing SOL =\.
