PC diagnostic question

I have had a very interesting time with my newly built computer. One day a storm hit my cable modem and my motherboard. The system wouldn't even try to start. I had a local shop troubleshoot the system and found that the motherboard was bad. While waiting on my motherboard, I ordered a pc diagnosic card. After installing my new motherboard, the system powers up but does nothing,. The diagnostic card shows error A4. According to the documentation, the next step is the memory test. So, it sounds like my memory is shot. Also, the cpu tested ok in another system. Does this sound like the problem? Also, is there a site that explains these codes in more detail? I think this diagnostic card will be very useful in the future, but it would be nice to know more about the boot up sequences.
Thanks
Tony

i cant address the diagnostic card, but the shop should have tested every component. anything and everything could be fried.

I know that they tested the motherboard and cpu, but I don't think they tested the memory. I will test a new stick of memory tomorrow.

The typical "diagnostic" cards simply reads port 80h on the I/O bus.
IBM created the original port 80h codes on the IBM PC. If other BIOS manufacturers use the same codes, it's really up to them. You'd have to check with your BIOS vendor.
Port 80h codes only show diagnostics that are performed by the BIOS itself.
