CRC Error after burning CD

Hi,

I was looking through the archives and couldn't find any topic relating to my problem so I decided to post this:

I am having a problem after I burn CDs. I use Nero Burning ROM 5.5 running on Windows XP. Each CD burns fine with no errors reported by the program, however when I try access the CD after burning it, some files will not be accessible and I get a cyclic redundancy check error when trying to copy them to my hdd. I tried copying the files with the standard windows copy dialog, as well as Total Copy, both ways giving me the CRC error. This error has popped up out of the blue, I was writing CDs fine up till a week ago - no hardware or settings have changed. I tried testing the CDs I burnt on other PCs and CD-ROM/RW drives, getting the same error. This error occurs when I do a CD to CD copy (image on hdd first), and when I have files on my hdd (not as an image) and write them to CD. I am not trying to overburn the CDs.

There was an update for Windows XP in Windows Update concerning CD writing problems but this did not help either.

I know it is not the software that I am using because it worked fine up till recently. I am wondering if it is the media that I am using (although these CDs works fine when others use them for burning), or is this a sign that my CD writer is packing up? If so, can this hardware problem be easily repaired or must I buy a new one?

Some feedback would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you reinstalled Nero and the latest update? If not, try that first.

Also, look into installing a trial of some other CD writing software. Alcohol 120 can copy cds and burn images, and there's a few at Tucows (CDMate and Drop-To-CD).

If you expierence the same problems with those programs, it's likely your burner is dying.
