IE's Web Dominance Stronger than Ever

It hasn't been significantly updated since 1998, but Microsoft's Internet Explorer continues to dominate the Web, garnering a record market share of 95.4 percent, according to real-time web analytics firm OneStat.com. What's more, IE has garnered its highest usage level ever at a time when other browsers, such as Mozilla Firebird and Apple Safari, have earned record amounts of publicity for adding crucial features IE lacks, including pop-up ad blocking and a tabbed user interface that optionally negates the need for opening multiple browser windows.
The number one browser overall, Internet Explorer 6.0, controls 66.3 percent of the market, compared to 14.5 percent for IE 5.5 and 12.7 for IE 5.0. Mozilla is in fourth place with 1.6 percent of the market, but the total market share for browsers based on Mozilla technology is about 4.1 percent. Alternative browsers such as Opera and Safari barely register on the chart, with 0.6 and 0.25 percent of the market, respectively; both are used less frequently than the legacy Netscape Navigator 4.x browser, which also hails from the late 1990's.

I wonder how they measure this. I'm sure it isn't as accurate as it should be.

Everyone I know that uses Mozilla or Firebird uses the user agent switcher extension or prefbar (not compatible with FB) user agent changer (some sites won't even let you in unless you use the IE spoof). This cannot be as accurate as they think it is.
If everyone that uses these browsers used the real UA I think there would be quite surprise.
From what I've read there won't be an IE7, but of course I could and probably am mistaken. I dislike IE very much.

Not surprising at all ... the poll was probably conducted on predominantly Windows users, in which case IE should come out on top for obvious reasons. Non-windows users will almost certainly answer a non-IE browser, but since majority of computer users are still on Windows, the survey is not really drastically inaccurate ... It is still believable to speculate that IE controls approximately 90% of the browser market, or at least 80% with a huge margin of error.
IE 6.0 is reported to be the last standalone browser from Microsoft - meaning it'll be the last "downloadable" browser. Future versions of IE will be tightly incorporated into Microsoft's future operating systems, and hence cannot be used in other platforms or OS'es ... so Mac/Linux users who still prefer IE6 over the "native" browsers on that platform will be outta luck on getting the next IE version. Older Microsoft operating systems also won't be able to use newer IE versions coz it is said that for their future browsers to evolve, the architecture has to be ready for it...
So those who are not intent on upgrading their operating systems to Microsoft's latest should consider the other browser alternatives ... altho IMHO, IE is still the best in rendering webpages...

There's a huge bug in Mozilla now, which really needs to be fixed. As you surf, GUI handles are leaked, leading to redraw problems. This only affects the Windows builds, as far as I know.
You can sign up and vote for the bug here if you are a Mozilla user.

80% market share I could believe. Not 95%.
I just don't think they accurately measured it.
Browser spoofing aside, you have to consider if the same person connects to a site often using IE, and another person connects once a week with another browser, they are equal shares of the market, but are probably not being counted equally.
That's all I'm saying.

Ive always pretty much used IE cuz I didnt really want to learn something new. But I used mozilla just a little while ago and liked it a lot. Im thinking about switching to it actually.

If this is the same bug I've read about, it can be overcome by setting a reasonable memory cache size (through the user.js file). I believe the one I've seen reccomended is 4096kb, but I have mine set at 10240kb and have no problems at all with Firebird 0.60 (I use Moz 1.2.1 instead of more recent versions because I like the version, easy to find themes and it just works well for me). I have a lot of RAM for a WinME system, 512MB.
