choppy Diablo 2 performance

Whenever I play Diablo 2, something strange occurs(in both single and multiplayer modes). The game will be running fine but every minute or so the game will suddenly become extremely choppy, becoming unplayable. This happens for about 15 seconds and then stops but repeatedly occurs. My computer specs are:
- 256 MB of RAM
- nVidia TNT2 pro video card(something like that...)
I have the latest driver and the patch.
I know nVidia cards aren't exactly perfect for playing D2 but I know of some people who use the same card and have no problems. I think it probably has something to do with the actual CD so before I decide to return it, if anyone has any ideas as to what is my problem, I would be extremely grateful.

Are you running any extra programs in the background? Some things may cause this sort of lag. Especially if you leave a virus scanner on or something similiar. Either way, try hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL and shut down extra programs that are running. Leave only systray, explorer, point32 if you have it, and rnaapp if connected by dial-up. Now try and see if it runs better.
Also, there are other ways to improve performance such as setting the role of your computer to server, or customizing your swapfile. Blizzard has a tice tip page on how to this here.
If you need more help, post back with more system specs and we'll offer some more ideas that may help.

I closed all of the extra programs and followed Blizzard's advice but to no avail. The game keeps becoming choppy in regular intervals. I returned the game, thinking it was a bug and the same thing happened to the new copy.
More of my system specs are:
Pentium 4 1.4 ghz
Windows Me
256 MB of RAM
60 GB hard drive
nVidia TNT2 Pro video card(or something like that)
Um...I can supply more if needed.
My computer is brand new so I wouldn't think it would be because of memory limitations. Someone help me please.

I don't know if this is the problem, but on my system, in windown ME, every so often some stupid windows program starts up in the background called Winmngmt or soemtihng to the nature, it does this. If i CTRL+ALT+DEL , and lcose this, all is fine, untill it starts up again about an hour or so later. Sometimes it only starts once a day others it starts frequently, normally every hour or so though. I tihnk this is windows task scheduler, but i don't have it enabeled.
Gluck figureing out my babbled post, i was ratther in a hurry when i posted this =P
