Lances in Diablo 2--worst thing I have ever seen.

Blizzard--what in Gods good name were you thinking when you introduced lances without considering game balance at all?
Lances currently possess the best range AND damage in the game. If anyone wishes to say that the disadvantage is in durability--you are way wrong. By the time a lance loses its durability, you should more than enough loot to return back, sell, and repair it--trust me I have a lance.
However, when I consider that most weapons have pro's and con's the lance is way over the edge.
Lets compare it to the Polearm: Same range (afaik) but considerably less damage. Now where in these two weapon types is there an advantage to one to the other? If damage of a lance was SLIGHTLY higher then that is easy to understand. However, when the damage of a great lance can be upwards of 330 how in the heck does that negate the differences between these two weapons or the maces class?
Why would you introduce a weapon that obviously makes any other barbarian oriented weapon insignificant in the way those characteristics bring into the game itself? Yes, pikes and yaris were too little for before--now you went the full spectrum the other way and made a wonderous weapon that is simply foolish to have in the game with its range.
The problem is, now your faced with a horrible repercussion. Your faced with a public relations problem at best if you attempt to fix the imbalance you have created in the game by 'nerfing' the lance. Granted, you could introduce other weapons by beefing them up but how does this now affect all the other weapon types for other classes? See how hard of a problem you've placed upon yourselves now? By introducing lances you made the problem worse than it was before.
Yes, people with lances are absolutely overjoyed with their new toy. Who wouldn't be? They as sure don't want to hear from someone like me who thinks their luck is just way too much.
Now this is my opinion, but if your going to set a high mark of 300+ damage you probably should consider how that plays in the balance of all weapon classes. Considering the pro's and con's of various weapons I personally would have established the following maximums:
Lances: Max 250
Polearms: Max 230
Maces: Max 310 2 handed
Thats just three classes to start.
I could go on and on on how bad an idea it was to introduce lances "as-is" on taking the longest weapon in the game and giving it such wacky damage.
Now, if act 5 is going to be where it justifies lances. I hope we see some VERY strong weapons of all OTHER types that actually balance out the current discrepancy--but why do we now have to wait on the prospect of an expansion pack to remedy this flaw? Hmmm?
Now, a critic may say to compare 'average' damage instead. Well, the average damage of a best lance currently exceeds the average damage of the best bec or scythe by a very large margin. The two weapons are the closest to compare. Again, don't pull the 'durability' disadvantage because it is a very weak argument.
Bad job on lances Blizzard. Way bad.

I somewhat agree, not because of the apparent introduction of the lance itself, but the timing in which it was introduced.
Blizzard can still try and balance the lance in the 1.04 patch, though. The question is, would they want to, and do they consider balancing the lance as a priority for the patch.
But this could also go the other way. If Blizzard decides to nerf the lance the same way it nerfed the other skills of the characters, it might also elicit uproar among those gamers who restarted their Barbarians and Amazons and decided to concentrate on polearms to take advantage of the lance...
I am guessing Blizzard added the lance because no one was using polearms too much. Now they may have to rectify this hasty decision and bear with the consequences.

Well to be specific its the lance skill but I understand your point nevertheless. Just clarifying for the masses.
Its definitely a tough nut to crack unfortunately.
