(Things you can think about while I look up the correct spelling for ...)
Let me confess something here. I am a dinosaur. out-dated. old and in the way. terminally lagged. opinionated. tending toward curmudgeonry and misanthropic behaviors. I can spell Eisenhower and actually know who he was. So why the confession? let's say it's actually more of a disclaimer for recent events that may or may not have any substance or reality. Like most of us, I tend to disbelieve anything until I hear about it on the TV Guide Channel.
In my town there is a site called CoMoMusic.com. It's put together by young folks mainly to promote young musicians, bands, and whatever they call the new stuff passing as music. It's a good idea but they haven't a clue how to really promote themselves. Needless to say they are very suspicious about (old) guys like me. They want credibility and they want to organize so they are not screwed by the establishment.
I waded in by saying the best way to gain credibility is lose the stupid posts and idiot threads on your board.
example: What is your favorite music to jack or jill off to?
When I saw this one, I posted to the admin. hey I find this post offensive, and it is not appropriate for someone purporting to want credibility for the musical community. I represent a part of that community and we don't find that sort of post as being in our best interests. Needless to say, I was crucified, flamed, parboiled, and asked to keep my opinions to myself or go elsewhere. I went elsewhere.
So Im shaking my head, wondering if I have truly become establishment part of that amorphous mass of "Theys and Thems" I used to rail against when I was young. If so its a sad end to such a promising beginning. This net etiquette thingy still has me wondering what is appropriate or what isnt. My last parting shot to the site was to say, You guys have the inmates running the asylum, you will never gain credibility by having posts like the above example there for people to see. Their reply, "dude, everyone knows its the NET! you see something that you don't like, don't read it!!!" I am still pondering that for a deeper meaning.
The second thing happened last nite on the Hallmark cable channel. I was watching Darby O'Gill and the Little People. Come commercial time it was an M&M commercial showing an obnoxious little twerp talking out loud in the movie, and disrupting the movie for everyone until someone took him out with a Yellow M&M. I turned to my friend and said, Did you just see that? M&M is promoting their product as a movie A**hole remover. See some idiot you just bean him with M&Ms. I am still wondering how they got that past Legal. Seems to be promoting incitement to riot if you ask me. But then again they didn't ask me. I was probably too old.
So I have to ask myself If my attitudes are changing for the good or the bad... I used to think I was hip but even hip is outdated now. Saying you are hip dates you. I don't even know what the equivalent of Hip is now...same thing with games anymore... Diablo the original is so outdated your chances of finding someone who was actually there and playing it is worse than your chances of actually logging on Bnet and playing a game for longer than 10 minutes. I was there. Same with a handful of other games....been there done that...all supposed to be the ultimate in games and none lasted longer than your average 12 year old mind span at an adult book store rack. They are still around but they are more like theme park worlds than games anymore. Cheaper than DisneyWorld but not by much.
I have been playing antique board games like clue, monopoly, chutes and ladders, and even crazy eights. It's scary. I fear that I have run out of contemporary fantasys to keep me from the real world. Hell the games do feel like the real world. I will get back to you when I decide what to do. What would you do in my case? beside therapy.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Multiplayer games nowadays are a big joke. Pointless to play unless you have a group of friends that you know will play as well. Even then, morons ruin everything as often as not. The net has changed. Before the net was easily accessible to everyone (early diablo days), there was probably even odds that people would be reasonable. Nowadays, I'd say the odds more around one in a thousand, and most people are impatient little brats who don't know anything but instant gratification.
Bleh.

eh, youre an old fuddy-duddy
but that doesnt really matter. it is rather difficult to give credibility to a site that maintains a thread of that title. its not necessarily offensive on its own, but it doesnt really have a place on a site that is business oriented. and thats what promoting music is, a business. actually, thats the kind of thread i would expect to hear about on SG.
although i find the M&M commercial to be brilliant, you do have to wonder how it got on the air. its a lawsuit waiting to happen.
i think you should go to ebay. spend all your kids inheritance on old collectibles that theyll have to sell when you die.

You're just being pessimistic. Things aren't as bad as you make them out to be. Times change, and you can't hang on to the past forever. Find the good points of the present that appeal to you instead of mulling over how it 'used to be.'

Looking at some of the bands they have on there, I doubt they care about if something will offend anyone. For the most part, if its run by young people, and its music related, don't expect a walk in the park. They are not representing the whole music community, and it would be pretty foolish to think that just because they do some things that you consider to be wrong, the whole damn system is affected. It isn't.

To add on that, I know that if some guy that I dont know came on to my message board and started to tell me I should run my forum by his expectations, I wouldn't be all open arms either.

actually niner, they do say they represent the whole local music community, but I do get your point. My solution was to just leave the site alone and let it be. I doubt if I will be missed. At least I know now that at some point in THEIR lives they will turn into their parents too.
hehe.
