Win98 Woes

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm running a PIII 1G with 1G of ram. I recently uninstalled XP by simply formatting my hd and installed 98 again, but my machine locks up constantly. Most of the time this is while running a couple of minor programs (IE, MSN messenger,MS Word). I've looked at a few optimization sites to no avail. Any ideas on issues going from XP to 98 in that way?

Well...it might have to do with the fact that 98 is A LOT less stable than XP. Whyd you uninstall XP anyway? Also, if you completely formatted your disk, there should be anything left from XP to get in the way, if you're worrying about that.

Windows 98 does not handle a lot of RAM well at all. It can cause all sorts of weird problems.

Limit the amount of RAM that Windows "sees" in msconfig (advanced>troubleshooting?) to around 256MB and see if it helps.

I removed XP because in my experience, 98 gave me a LOT less problems. XP ate my RAM and harddrive space and doesn't work well with my recording software. I'm using the machine as a server in my recording studio until I can afford a decent mac.

I updated my BIOS, which reduced the amount she locks up, but she still does lock up. As for the amount of RAM, win 98 never gave me any strange problems with the gig of RAM before. I used 98 for a year or two before picking up XP. Thats when my horrors began, so I don't think thats the issue.

Cant wait till I can get rid of all this MicroCrap
