Microsoft: Only Responsible for Half the Crashes

Microsoft has laid the blame for half of all Windows crashes on third-party code.

Scott Charney, chief security strategist at Microsoft, told developers at the TechEd 2003 conference in Brisbane that information collected by Dr Watson, the company's reporting tool, revealed that "half of all crashes in Windows are caused not by Microsoft code, but third-party code."

Charney's comments come as the company highlights the rigor with which it tests its own products before release. Microsoft emphasized that products such as Yukon and Exchange Server were undergoing thorough testing--both internally and via independent third parties--prior to their release.

Warning: company hype.

Well, they do have a point...

Why the statement? Are they trying to divert attention from the MSBlast incident?

I think they just mean in general, that half the time 'windows' crashes, it's not windows crashing.

It's a pretty big point to make.

I gotta go with TR on this.

How do they explain this?

It's just too funny. No explanation. No available fix without going through them. No symptoms other than right-clicking on Explorer.

On the other point, if Microsoft would quit changing the generally accepted programming of Win32 by modifying the OS, then programs wouldn't crash everytime a new Service Pack is released.

So if half the crashes are caused by 3rd party programs - doesn't that mean the other half ARE caused by MS code?

And how does that stack up? How many 3rd party programs to distribute half the crashes over to how many MS programs for the other half?

hmmm glass half empty or half full? As a wise man said: "depends on if you are drinking or pouring"

sounds to me that MS just admitted their code is buggier than anyone else's by a large factor lol

Pfffff. Everyone's code is buggy. Anyone who claims their code isn't buggy is a liar.

And while there may be more 3rd party programs out there, none even begin to approach the amount of code in windows. It's like saying when it rains, an empty bucket holds one litre, while an empty swimming pool holds thousands, and then mocking the swimming pool.

Well, I don't know about y'all, but I can't even remember the last time my windows really crashed. Sometimes a program crashes, but I can just go to the taskmanager, close it down, and restart it. Win2k/XP/NT are pretty damn stable by now.

Of course if you're stuck with 95/98/ME, just forget everything I just said.

Same here. I haven't had an OS Crash since I started using Win2k in their last beta. The only times I've had crashes have been due to bad hardware.
