Gentoo has picked up quite the following, but I haven't used it.

you could go with ms linux http://www.mslinux.org/

Let me reccomend Slackware. its stable, secure and easy (in my opinion) to use. with slackware you will learn more about the way the system works and unix in general (slack is probably the most "unix" like distro).
Gentoo has gained a lot of folowing quickly and a lot of people swear by it. I tried it once but I always find myself coming back to slackware (6 years).
A distribution is just the linux kernal, a package manager (some not all) and what ever packages (programs) they include so really you can install what ever you want later and end up with basicly the same system.

Debian, but simply because it's the only distro I have any real experience with.

But I do hear that many who start using Debian never go back to anything else. So that's gotta be worth something.

I have previously used slackware, back in the days when i was a linux virgin, i remember the hassle of setting it up on a pc and configuring it so everything worked, many sleepless nights believe me. I am curious to see how slackware has turned out over the years though so i might give that a download, if i remember correctly its only 2 CD's so that should be downloaded by the time i wake up in the morning

If anyone else has any suggestions please let me know.
