I have Windows 2000 which is connected to the internet through a 56K dial-up, i keep getting these pop-up that are the microsoft Messenger Service windows but they are advertisements ( i hope you all know what i'm talking about) It says that its because there is an open IP port in my computer, is there a way to close that or some way to stop them comming?

How to Disable Messenger Service

Hope this helps.

thanks, I'll try it.

I'm sure the method described in that article works, however, I was able to disable Messenger a much simpler way. In fact, I wonder if my way is better since I don't think I disabled any ports/connections.

To get rid of annoying messages/adds and stop Messenger from starting in the task bar, all I did was exit Messenger from the task bar and then go to C:\Program Files\Messenger and rename "msmsgs.exe" to "msmsgs1.exe". This has worked on four computers and I have not come across any problems or ads.

The only possible issue with simply renaming the file is this:

It's a system service. Unless you disable it, the operating system thinks the service is running. When something happens that makes the operating system try to call on the file msmsges.exe -- which it thinks is still there since the service is enabled -- you could get a system crash or error.

Besides, renaming the file will case a lot of event log errors which look ugly.

It's always better to turn things off properly than to "hack" your way through it.
