I am getting kinda mad at this site. I have posted twice and have gotten 1 reply that barely worked. My problem is that I lag whenever I type on Diablo 2 LoD. I don't know if this is just my computer or it is something that I have downloaded. When I play on the game I press the keys to open up my inventory or show my stats, and every once in a while I lag. Sometimes it will last for 10 sec, sometimes I will lag for 1 min. I dont know what is happening.
This happens in Single player and in multiplayer, wether it is Battle.net or tcp/ip. It only happens when I press on the keyboard in the game. It won't lag every time I press the keys but sometimes. It happens when I am online and offline. But sometimes if I press alt-esc to show desktop when I am lagging I sometimes get out quick enough to see a little message in the bottom right that says "Symantec Scanning Message".
If you need more information please tell me and I will try to give it to you. Please help me I have posted twice on this forum and 3 times on Battle.net.

Disable Norton Utilities by going to START -> RUN -> type MSCONFIG, then go to STARTUP tab and disable (uncheck) everything that has to do with Norton ... if you don't know which, post the list you have in MSCONFIG startup that has a checkmark on it...
If you are using broadband, Norton will always try to connect to the Internet even if you are playing single player games, because it is downloading updates sometimes. An earlier reply to your post suggested you disable all background programs while you're playing... did you try that, or not?
Please note that people here are volunteers, so there is really no reason to be mad at people who are not being paid to help you... good luck.

I am sorry for being mad but it is just that I am really frustrated and I would like to find out the problem. I just want to beable to play Diablo 2 the way it is supposed to be played.
Yes I have tried disabling all background programs. It didn't work. I don't know which of these startup things are Norton. Here they are.

dw
dw

Looks like you have way to many programs running at start up. This is causing your game to slow down. Your using way to much memory loading these programs.
Posted by: Canis Lupus
Okay, the ones in red MUST be disabled/unchecked. Leave the ones in green checked. The ones in yellow can be disabled but it's up to you:
WkUFind - this is a Microsoft Works tool
Bcmsmmsg - this has something to do with your modem. Leave it as is.
diagent - Diagnostics for Soundblaster options.
updreg - Reminder for Soundblaster registration
DirectCd - For burning CDs - disable if you don't burn often
hpztsb04 - HP Printer shortcut
dw - downloadware, should definitely be disabled. you got this when you installed MovieNetworks, Medialoads or PAgent
dw - See above
ccApp - part of Norton Antivirus.
ccRegVfy - part of Norton Antivirus
GhostStartTrayApp - part of Norton Ghost
GhostStartTrayApp - see above
mmtask - some soundcards need this to support Midi
CMESys - part of Gator (spyware) - definitely uncheck this (look here for Gator removal)
ADUserMon - part of Iomega's Active Disk - disable this if you don't normally access the contents of a Zip/Jaz disk
ImgIcon - part of Iomega - see above
deskup - part of Iomega - see above
PgMonitr - this is Adware - should definitely be disabled
ElbyCheck - part of CloneCD or something, it monitors filters for CDs/DVDs - disable if you don't regularly burn CDs. Otherwise, leave this checked.
Digital Line Detect - related to your modem, usually installed by OEMs like Dell or HP - leave this alone.
GStartup - part of Gator - definitely disable this.
Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders - you can disable this one if you don't use Calendar Reminders in Microsoft Works.
Precision Time - something that synchronizes your system clock with an outside source?
Quick Books 2002 Delivery Agent - if you don't use Quickbooks often, disable this.
For optimum performance, you can just uncheck everything marked red and yellow ... after doing so, click OK and restart your computer ... do a complete scandisk/defrag for good measure, and post back if you continue to have problems...
Note: Disabling Norton Antivirus will leave you open to viruses and trojans. If you disable this, just be careful on what email attachments or downloaded files you open...

Thankyou soooooo much i am gonna try that right now!!
Posted by: XxMaLeVoLeNTxX
Ok.. I tried what you told me to. I unchecked all the red and some of the yellow. Now my Norton autoprotect won't work and Diablo 2 still lags like it did. I am going to talk to professional guy today but if you have any other ideas plz tell me.

Has Diablo 2 ever worked well for you even with..........

that video card?
Posted by: XxMaLeVoLeNTxX
Yes diablo 2 used to work just fine for like 6 months. Now its not.
Posted by: fibbi
norton also runs as a service sometime, so you might want to try disabling that. start>run>services.msc
scroll to norton antivirus client>properties>disable
Posted by: rexoverbey
If what the other threads don't work try uninstalling the antivirus long enough to test your game. Then if that doesn't work reinstall the game. If that doesn't work try lowering your color depth. Or reinstall your video drivers from Nvidia, this might be what it is since you said it was working fine six months ago. Revert to your older video card drivers.
Posted by: XxMaLeVoLeNTxX
ok i will try that. but what do i do if it works with out norton?
Posted by: Shalome
If it works without Norton, then you'll know Norton is causing the problem.
If it turns out to be Norton, it's safe to disable Norton while you're playing on battle.net -- as long as you remember to turn it back on when you log off battle.net.

You seem to have a lot of adware/spyware on your system. It would be a good idea to get Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com and run it(make sure you update it after you install). That stuff causes problems for everything, as well as your PC's security.
Posted by: XxMaLeVoLeNTxX
Ok. I want to uninstall Norton. When I go to Add/Remove programs the only one I can remove is Norton System works. The only one I have a cd for is Norton AntiVirus. Is there a way that I can uninstall Norton Antivirus only?
Posted by: AngstMerchant
If Norton A/V has its own folder in the Start Menu, there may be an Uninstall program there. Otherwise, I would suggest uninstalling the entire program suite and then, when re-installing, keep your eyes open for a custom installation option. This will likely allow you to choose which components are installed in the software suite. If it doesn't, you have to decide whether or not you want the whole thing on your machine or not. Frankly, the disable Norton A/V while on Battle.Net suggestion sounds pretty valid.
Posted by: XxMaLeVoLeNTxX
My norton a/v is disabled right now. I need to reinstall it anyways to get it to work again. The thing that is disabled is Auto protect. With this disabled my problem still occurs.
Posted by: XxMaLeVoLeNTxX
Ok, I uninstalled all of norton. All norton system works is off my computer. I restarted and everything. I started to play diablo and the problem occured again. If it is not Norton then what could it be?
Posted by: fibbi
Well, at this point, it seems you need to go to more drastic measures. I would reccomend wiping your HD (which you should do anyway, seeing as it's loaded with spyware). If it worked before but not now and you haven't changed any hardware, its 99% a software problem(the 1 percent being hardware failure).
If that doesn't work, try a new video card.
If that doesnt work, try a hammer.
Posted by: XxMaLeVoLeNTxX
I am pretty close to goin strait for the hammer. Imagine, your typing a something to your friend. Its taken you a long time to type then all of a sudden you lag out. there goes everything that you have typed. Or you are level 96 sorc almost lvl 97 then u press B to open inventory you lag. Cows surround you and you die. There goes about 1 hour of work. It is very frustrating.
Not much to worry. Come tuesday i will have a new comp. I am making my own. Just for me. I wont need this POS. No more getting pissed off.

make sure you don't make the mistake of using XP Home as your OS

I would like to hear the reasoning behind that statement.
I have three systems with XP Home as the OS that run 24/7, and need I say, they are completely Stable. As for the other OS choices, well, I use Windows 2000 Pro at work, and in the recent past when I was faced with OS choices, I did not even consider it for home use. That's not to say that I dislike it, it's just that it offers nothing any different to me than XP Home does. As for XP Pro, well I haven't used it, but that's only because XP Home has been so stable and done everything I have needed it to do, that I haven't had to consider dropping the Big Bucks for something I have had no trouble with.
I guess the reason your statement got my attention, is because I have seen too many people make the mistake of associating XP Home with Windows Me, which is a complete mistake to think that the two have anything in common.
Posted by: fibbi
psh, theres really no difference at all between home and pro. Emote desktop can be done with PC-Anywhere, and you can jest get your own ecnryptor.
Posted by: uh...ok
Big time stability differences between home and pro. From what I've heard (all the horror stories), XP Home is hit or miss, where as Pro is a sure shot every time.
And you don't have to deal with the crappy OS registration thingie (or else Windows disables itself after 30 days) in Pro.

How is it that These Differences translate into your above thoughts?
It's the same OS. It just has buisness type features left out. How can buisness features left out translate into

I don't know where you heard that.
During Setup I was prompted to "activate" Windows XP. What is activation and why do I need to do it?
A: To help reduce software piracy, Windows XP uses the product activation system, which allows your copy of Windows XP to be installed on only one computer.
You can activate your copy of Windows either:
During Setup.
—or—
By clicking Start, pointing to All Programs, and then clicking Activate Windows.
If you wait to activate your software, you can still use Windows for 30 days. During this time, you'll be reminded periodically to activate Windows.
IMPORTANT
You don't need to give your name or other personal information when you activate Windows.
After 30 days, you must activate Windows XP in order to continue using it.
You must have administrator rights to activate Windows XP.

Simple ... with all the problems he has been experiencing as of late, shouldn't he go with the version that has better stability features? Maybe he can go NTFS for optimum security and stability if he wants, which he can't do with XP Home ...
It's just a preference for me ... I myself have not upgraded to "any" XP OS on my home systems (still using Win2K on NTFS) ... but if I were to upgrade, I would go XP Pro just for NTFS alone...
Posted by: Outlaw
You don't need XP Pro for NTFS, XP Home supports it too.
Posted by: fibbi
Its not only that they support it, they use it. The only time you'd ever use FAT32 in XP is if you upgrade from an old OS and dont want to change file systems.
Wow, i never thought i'd be correcting laggy himself.
Posted by: nocode
This is the very reason that I said anything to begin with. For some reason, there are many people out there that completely do not get it in regards to XP Home and XP Pro. XP Home is the same OS as XP Pro with only Buisness features left out.
I guess I could put it this way so that everyone can understand. You know how some music groups put out studio cd's and sometimes they release a limited amount of the same cd with bonus tracks on it. Well XP Home is the same cd, it's just missing the bonus tracks.
Posted by: uh...ok
Well, I admit that my claims are ungrounded by any personal experience - and perhaps I myself have been a victim of other people's ignorance (by listening to their horror stories about XP Home when in fact they were using ME).
Perhaps the only reason why Home is so discriminated against is because of the earlier stages of Windows XP's release - Pro came out a tiny bit later and was thus a little more updated than Home. But now that both versions of the OS are up to date, any differences between the two are negligible.
