my cdrom didn't see any of the vxd files on my modem installation cd so i could't instal. could this be a virus?

I seriously doubt a virus could cause that problem.
When you're installing your modem, if you can't get the files to load off the CD, try pointing the hardware detection/installation wizard to C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS -- you can usually get it to install initially that way. Then later you can go out to your modem manufacturer's website and download the drivers directly and update the drivers through your control panel.
