Task Manager in XP "disappearing"

ctrl+alt+delete or right clicking in task bar and selecting task manager flashes task manager on screen for a second or two (maybe), places icon in right side of task bar but then when moused over it disappears. IE cannot access task manager - any suggestions?????

If you have Virus software, make sure it is updated, and do a complete scan of your system. Also, if you have not updated Windows lately, do that also.

Thanks - should have mentioned in my first post that I had done both of those things before posting original message- have installed all suggested updates to XP and ran full scan systemusing updated Norton. Ran scan again last night just "in case". Other suggestions?

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but xp has a feature/annoyance/bug with the task manager. if you doble click on the gray area outside of the task manager, the tabs and the window bar will all dosapear. this can be remedied by a simply double clicking again.
If that doesn't work, the only advice i have is:
1-deal with it
2-reisntall XP(shouldnt take too long anyhow)
