Recovering lost clusters

I was in the process of reinstalling Windows 98 on my computer and was in the MS-DOS mode part of the set up portion and somehow (I have no idea how) I ended up in a different kind of scandisk than I have ever been in before. It gave me info on bad clusters and errors in individual files and directories. Then it gave a choice to save and options to fix the problems or delete them. It reached the max # of File####.chk names and freed up a good amount of space. It told me to either rename the files or delete them and then scandisk again. I didn't know what to delete or how or what rename them, so I didn't do either. I tried to do the same thing today, but get to the scandisk and all it lets me do is a surface scandisk but gives me no other choices. I know there are still damaged clusters left from before, but can't figure out how to get back to the spot I was before. Can anyone walk me through the steps to get back to where I want to go?? I only have a 3.2 GB hard drive and need more space. Thanks everybody!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Hope to hear from someone soon. Have a nice Sunday guys!! thanks again.y yummyplummy

Before you entered into the setup part to install windows, did you use Fdisk to delete any existing partions, and then create a new one before formatting the drive? Is it doing the scanning and telling you about bad clusters in that part of the process? Before you enter into the windows set up, you want the hard drive to be completely clean, having no recollection of anything on it in the past. If the hard drive is damaged and can't recover all of it's capable capacity, it's probably on it's way out, and it may be time to consider a new hard drive if you expect windows to not have any problems once it's installed.
You did back up anything that you wanted to keep before going into all of this didn't you?
These instructions from Microsoft's Site should help you.
