Video editing

I am trying to do some video editing of DVD movies. I have a DVD burner and video editing software, but I can't get the DVD movie clips onto my hard drive and into the Adobe primer. Can anyone help me pull either the whole movie or clips on my hard drive?

If it's a commercial DVD, it's very likely copy-protected to prevent you from doing things like copying it to your hard drive.

Yeah, it's possible to do, but it's illegal, so don't.

Laggy would get mad at me if I said anything else.

I assume that when you say editing movies you mean comercialy stamped movies such as the matrix. If this is the case then the reason you experiencing trouble is that the movies are copyrighted material. It is possible to brake the code, but dont, its illegal. If you want to just make legal compressed copies of DVDs grab a copy of DVD X-Copy, though i will warn you it does not work with all computers and DVDs.

Okay thanks guys. I appreciate your comments. I use video clips for the college class I teach and they never show up "quality" with sound and picture so I thought I'd try burning the clips to DVD. Do you know is there a NOT illegal way to do this without burning a total direct copy?

I do not think that it is illegal to edit a comercial video for teaching purposes, but I am not entirely positive. The only way that I know to get I raw datastream from a comerically stamped DVD is to use an illegal ripper and linux, so I think that you might just be out of look, sorry.

Thanks....I talked to the computer staff at my university (the guy was on vacation so I went looking for other help!) In case you are interested, you an legally use up to 10% of the movie for whatever you want. However, we are still trying to figure out how to get the info off the DVD. What is your reccommendation of downloading the movies off a website? I found a great one with a one time membership fee of 25 dollars or something. Let me know!

Unfortunately, there is no legal way to get the data off a copy-protected DVD.

You may want to check with the video distributor; they may provide clips to work with for educational purposes.

I'm not sure about downloading movies from a pay site. Is it a legal site? $25 one-time fee for unlimited access to movies doesn't sound legit, to me...

I agree with shalome, dont download off the internet, the $25 fee sounds like you might get screwed. Check into DVD X-Copy, you might be able to export to divX in order to edit.
