LAN tax?

ORLANDO -- A new rule now being formulated in Tallahassee could lead to a state tax of 9 percent -- or higher -- on computer networks commonly used in businesses.
The proposed rule pushes the definition of communications systems to include local area networks, or LANs, as well as wide area networks, or WANs, which connect computers across distances. Practically any office with two computers will have a local area network.
That brings them under the purview of the proposed rule, which includes computer networks as "substitute communications systems" -- subject to a 9.17 percent state tax, plus local option taxes.
What scares me about this is that it could eventually lead up to some attempt for a national "internet tax". While the feasability of this is in question, it really scares me that 10 years ago trying to control the internet was so humerous that scott adams did a cartoon about dogbert attempting to do it. Surprisingly enough, this was one of the few of dogbert's schemes that didn't work. Ugh...as UnThesis from XMule said, "weclome to the Fourth Reich of Amerika."

Its possible that there could be an internet tax but I do not see how. The same problem is present with a LAN tax; the article states a tax of 9% but the question is 9% of what? Data transferred? Network ussage? If these things were monitered by government agencies it would most likely be called on as an infringement of provacy and declared unconstatutional. There really are too many problems ascotiated with creating an internet or LAN tax for it to be a major concern for computer people. Even if such a tax were passed nationwide, this community for the most part, would not be affected because the tax is for buisness networks only.
