In need of a UPS Backup

We have been having a lot of power surges from a number of things lately. Some of the surges dont cause my PC to reset, but there have been several that have and they came at really bad times. So Im wanting to get a UPS Backup for my PC and monitor, perhaps also my modem and router, in case im playing a game online.

What VA ratting should I get? I know 350VA isnt enough. My PSU is a 430watts and my monitor is around 130watts. Not sure about the modem and router. I plan on buying an APC brand as Ive heard their the best.

Make sure that the VA rating on the UPS is higher then the totoal wattage of all devices you intend to plug into the unit. You should also leave at leas 20 watts to spear due to power fluctuation in devices (20 is pretty high, you could do with 10 or maybe even 5).

yes, apc

multiply your total wattage by about 1.4 to get the VA rating. of course, you wont be carrying a full load on your ps. a 650 will probably work well for you if you just want protection from low power and momentary power loss. 1000 if you want to be able to keep running for a while. the link below will help you decide on your individual needs.

apc has different quality ups even in the same size.

I checked out APC, their 1000va UPS are VERY expensive

I would like to be able to not lose power durring surges/spikes and have only about 5 mins of backup time. Thats all I really need. Last night we had a big lightning storm that lasted for about 2 hours and there were a ton of surges. 1 of them was enough to reset my system, the others just flickered the lights and speakers.

you can get discontinued ones from various places at times. i got a 1000 for $150 a few months ago.
but a 600 or thereabouts will do you for 5 min.
