New motherboard & hardware, winxp bluescreen

I'm not sure to put this in hardware or win2k/wp.
My friend just upgraded his system by getting a new motherboard, sound card, and case. Once everything was together, bios detected all the drives when we entered it but upon the normal checks it says they are not found but continues to boot, lists all the drives properly again, and shows a brief flash of the windows xp loading screen. At that point it bluescreened and restarted.
I have been brought to understand that this is a fairly common windows 2k and xp problem with new motherboards. Is there any way around this without forcing a reformat?
Thanks,
JaguarZ

IMO, the only way that system will ever be stable is to format the drive and reload the OS.
If his previous motherboard still works, use it to get the system back up so he can back up anything he may need and then format the drive and reload the OS when the new motherboard is introduced again.

Yeah, you'll need a format. There are ways of trying to upgrade motherboards without formatting and reinstalling windows, but they are hit and miss at best.
Better to go the full route, and save problems later.
