Memory upgrade problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello,

I just installed a new memory module in my notebook and the BIOS indicates that the computer is only recognizing the new module and not the original ("on-board") memory. I thought this was odd. I could understand if the machine wasn't recognizing the new memory module, but why would it recognize the new module and not the original?

Additional details:
Added 1 256 Meg module. System already had 256 in place. BIOS indicates a total of 256 in the expansion slot.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You say that the bios indicates 256 in the expansion slot so it might actually still know of the 256 onboard as well. In order to confirm this theory, boot to windows and then right click on my computer, then select properties. Look on the lower right of the tab that is displayed as default and see what it says your amount of memory is. If its still only 256, post back so we can see if there is another possible cause.

If you have not resolved the issue when/if you do post back, include more specs such as the name and model# of the notebook, and the OS you are using.

Arturo,

Thanks for the response. I checked the memory through 'My Computer \ Properties' and it also indicates a total of 256.

Have you looked all through your bios to see if it acknowledges the original 256mb at all. Maybe there is some kind of setting in the bios you need to change to allow the ram to work together.

What happens if you remove the new ram? What does the bios say then?

When I remove the new RAM the machine recognizes the original RAM module. I didn't see any way to modify the BIOS to recognize the new RAM module.

Check to see if there is a setting that enables the internal memory. It is possible, though unlikely, that the bios disables the internal memory when an external amount is detected. You might also want to check Fujitsu's website to see if that is a known problem and if there is a bios or other update to fix it.
