Question about upgrading RAM

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My computer is a Sony PCV-RX640. Right now it has 256MB of RAM, but it's not enough. I have another stick of RAM that is 256MB and 133 MHz, but when I add it, Windows doesn't boot up correctly. I'm not sure if that's more RAM than my motherboard is capable of running or what. I want as much RAM on it as possible, but I'm not sure what kind or how much I can use. My motherboard ID is 02/26/2002-I815-TUSL-LV. If anyone knows what I need, please respond here or e-mail me. Thanks in advance!

I think your problem is that you have two different types of RAM running in your computer or the same kind of ram at two different speeds. Check your computer manufacturere's manual or website to determine what RAM your computer has already installed. You need to add more RAM that is the same type and speed as what you already have, otherwise you could encounter instability, failure to boot, or permanent damage to the ram.

The amount of ram that you can use is a different story. I would be surprised if you motherboard did not support at least 1 Gb of ram but it will definately support 512mb. However, the amount that you will actually be able to make use of is different altogether. If you are using any OS under XP, dont bother installing more than 1 GB because the OS does not support any more memory, but with those OSes 512 is all that you need. For XP, you need at least 512 for good performance but higher denominations will be better until about the 1.5 Gb range where unless you do mass rendering of extremely detailed pictures and movies, more ram will not effect the overall performance of the system.

Finally, if whats posted above does not help, try updating your chipset drivers, and then flashing your bios to the latest version.

Hope this solves your problem!

but you must remove the power supply to access the memory sockets.

That stuck out to me when i read a review about that computer on PC World's Site. Make sure the 2nd memory module you added is installed correctly. Press firmly down on it to make sure it is seated properly.

With a 1.3-GHz Celeron processor and 256MB of PC-133 memory, our review VAIO earned a score of 91 on our PC WorldBench 4 tests.

I assume it's some kind of Generic brand of pc133 sdram. That may be hard to match brands with what's in it now.

Thanks for your replies. I checked Sony's website and it said that the RAM used was PC-133Mhz, which is what I tried to add, but Windows wouldn't boot with it installed. Do both sticks of RAM need to be made by the same manufacturer? I'm not sure who either is made by, but they're not the same. The RAM I'm trying to add is a couple years old and was used in another computer for a short while. If it's messed up, would that cause the same problem?

Some motherboards have issues with different brands of ram used together, and some don't.

To test the old ram to see if it is bad, remove the ram that came with the computer and replace it with the old ram. See if it boots properly. If it does, then the two different brands Do Not like each other.

It's possible that your mother board will have issues running two modules of ram even if they are made by the same company. My boy's computer has a cheap ECS K7S5A motherboard that has know issues about not being able to run stable using two modules of pc133. Fortunately that board also will run ddr ram, so I switched over to one module of 512mb ddrpc2700 and haven't had any more issues.

If there is a know issue about two modules of pc133 with your board, there may be a Bios flash for it that would fix the problem.

I just tried to boot it using just the stick of ram that I was adding and it didn't work, so I'm guessing that RAM has gone bad. I'll have to buy more tomorrow. Does anyone know if my motherboard is capable of running DDR ram?

Thanks a lot. I think that's it.
