Symantec Corp., well known for its anti-virus software for desktops and laptops, has announced a group of applications for handhelds. These will protect Palm OS and Pocket PC devices against viruses, worms, and other malicious code.
Symantec AntiVirus for Handhelds will provide both real-time and on-demand scanning. In addition, it will also introduce LiveUpdate Wireless. This new feature will allow users with a wireless Internet connection download virus definitions and Symantec product updates directly to their device over the Web.
It's amusing how the words "anti-virus" have become such a safety blanket. Read more on that at BrightHand. Also, Norton Antivirus 2004 is scheduled for release next month and will include a type of product activation like that of Windows XP:
Smith said Symantec's implementation of product activation is similar to Microsoft's and does not use Macrovision technology. Symantec's system generates a unique alphanumeric code to identify a PC configuration and ties it to the product key for a particular piece of software. It stores license information on the PC's hard drive and allows for up to five activations for the same product key.
"That accounts for users who make frequent upgrades or other changes to their PC," Smith said. "We've designed the solution to be flexible."
More is at C|Net. Symantec has commented that this new AV software will be the first to include spyware and privacy protection.
