Weird lag...

Last semester I pretty much left this computer on 24/7 and never had any performance issues.

Lately, it's been lagging up on me if I leave it on for a little more than 20 hours (only noticeable in gaming though - fps keeps going back and forth between 99 and 45 on CS, so fast that it's not noticeable on netgraph but very noticeable in gameplay). I haven't really installed anything new besides the latest blaster worm patches. Outpost is still running fine and Norton Corp 2K AV is still working like a charm.

I can't think of any processes that build up in memory usage with runtime...

Is this a sign that Windows is simply getting a little old (a year and a half since the last install/reformat), or that I just need to defrag, or something much worse?

Edit: I don't know why I put this into the PCG forum instead of the Software forum... whatever.

Additionally, system's the same as always:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1.62GHz)
512 MB DDR RAM
Visiontek GF4 Ti4400
Windows XP Pro

Try going into windows/temp and deleting everything.

And then the usual defrag/scandisk...

Perhaps your fans are getting dusty too?

Yea it's starting to happen more often and with less uptime... I guess I haven't dusted it since I came back (it's been in storage for 3 months) so vacuuming the fans would be a good idea.

I haven't defragged or done a scandisk since installation.

LOL... so I just defragged my C drive (it was in ok condition but XP recommended it for defrag) and then I go to my D drive - where most of my programs and apps are stored.

And this is the analysis.

Yeah Defrag is a good idea.
