memory mixing?

Greetings all! Maybe someone can answer this for me. I upgraded my comp from 256mb RAM to 384mb by removing one 128 stick and installing a 256 stick (in bank 0). The remaining 128 stick is a crucial and the 256 stick is PNY. OK, now when I boot the comp I get an error that says memory mixing detected. A few days ago I found out that the machine is only supposed to support 256mbs! However, it does show 384 in the bios and the performance tab of the task manager. What do you think. It's really just an annoyance but I'm curious as to what is goin on. Here are the dirty details:
HP Pavillion 4535
Celeron 400MHz (L1 cache: 32.0 Kb, L2 cache: 128.0 Kb)
PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0.4 (04-Aug-1999)
HAWK Asus
384 Mb (391 664 Kb)PC100 SDRAM
HDD Maxtor 80Gig
HP CD-Writer+ (D
Intel(r) 82810 Graphics Controller (4.00 Mb):
Microsoft Kernel DRM Audio Descrambler
Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter(LNE100TX v4)
Windows XP Professional
Thanks.

if it works as 384, leave it. otherwise youre looking at a new board, perhaps more. xp running on 256 cant be good.

Well, that was my thought too. I just wondered why the error message?
At first, I thought maybe buy another 256 PNY but when I found out about the mobo only supposed to support 256 I thought maybe I shouldn't push my luck just yet. At least until I can afford to build a new comp. Thanks for the reply redwrench.

Well, I guess the error message was proprietary to the HP BIOS and prompts just to inform you that the mobo detects an "unrecognized" memory combination, maybe due to the CAS latency differences between the two memory sticks and the default configuration in your CMOS setup... either that or HP configured its mobo to use just the memory they tell you to use, hehe

That wouldn't suprise me at all. I can't wait to build my own system. Hopefully since both my daughters are in comp classes in school now maybe I can justify it to myself to build me one and give them my old one soon! Thanks agian for the replies!

Just to let you know though, to avoid possible memory problems down the line, you should consider upgrading your computer soon ... the PNY memory you purchased is almost surely not PC-66 (which is probably the memory supported by your mobo) ... I am guessing it is either PC-100 or PC133 ... if you can find 256MB memory that runs at PC-66, it may be better ... again, this is only speculative, but it may lead to possible system stability issues down the line... consider yourself warned...
And good luck

Uh-oh. I guess pc100 is like pc133 now? Not backwards compatible?
And I consider myself warned. Thanks.
I just checked crucial's site and my comp is supposed to take pc100 which is what the PNY is. Oh, well as old as this thing is if it dies I'll just have a good excuse huh?
