NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Vivendi Universal's (V) Universal Music Group plans to sharply lower the consumer cost for compact discs, in an effort to bring customers back into retail stores and boost music sales.

In a press release Wednesday, Universal Music said it will reduce wholesale prices and implement a $12.98 manufacturer suggested retail price on virtually all of its top-line CDs in the U.S.

The plan will eliminate MSRPs of as much as $18.98, and the company believes retailers will start offering the cheaper CDs as soon as Oct. 1.

Smaller shops and stores like FYE need something like this to bring down the prices, otherwise I can't see them staying up much longer. With prices so much cheaper over the net and selections just as broad, their target audience is moving to cheaper alternatives.

sweet. now that the IRAA is serverly limiting file sharing it is nice to now that CDs will not be pushed up to the cost of an arm and a leg.

i think this is a step in the right direction but too small of one. lets see you can get a stack of blank CDs for what? I keep trying to do the math on the 15 dollar CD breakdown, and it don't add up to anything but the rich record companies getting richer and the consumers getting (use your imagination).
