Yes, it is true. The PS3 will be backwards compatible.
In a talk with Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, Ken Kutaragi, head honcho at Sony Computer Entertainment, officially confirmed that the successor to the PlayStation 2 will in fact be backward compatible with not only PS2 games, but also PS one games.

Why wouldn't it be backwards? If it wasn't I think it would get alot less
people buying it.

I
agree

My PS2 doesn't work very well.
Won't play some games and won't play some DVDs.
Thought I'd throw that in.
I want an X-Box.

I've got that same problem, my PS2 doesn't play most DVD, any CDs, and also won't play most PS2 games!
I have an Xbox, i feel i should warn you... in order to play DVDs on it, you have to buy their dvd remote, same with cds. Pretty lame.

Tell that to Nintendo. Hasn't the success of the GBA told them enough that backwards compatibilty helps sell consoles?

That might be one reason why Nintendo's stuff aint backwards compat.

Mine is the same way, no dvd or cd support, won't play ps2 or ps1 games, and says "GameCube" on the side.

Lame? I hardly think it's lame to provide what is, in my opinion, excellent DVD playback. The remote is great...not too bulky, and not too many buttons. It's just right.
Besides, who would want to get up every time they want to pause for maybe a quick second, or rewind/go back a scene incase they missed something. Not I...

I'm going to assuem that being backwards compatiable it is able to play both PS2 and PSone games? It is important to remember that to play old PSone games on the ps2 the actual ps1 chip is on the ps2 board. So, are we to assume that both will be playable on the PS3? I understand that more PS2 games will want to be played, but Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a great game which I don't want to give up. Does anyone have any other info other than backwards compatability for the PS3? I know it is quiet a ways off from development, just curious...at this point anyways. I've read that it won't be til 2006 that the PS3 will even come out, but that's probably just speculation.

Ok heres a reason it prolly wont be backwards compatible. THERE CHANGING THERE GPU PRODUCER. How would you like to ask Nvidia to make there next chip able to read and play the old "ATI" games. They response "Show me the green or it ain't gonna happen". To be quiet simple 80% chance of no harddrive in either system "why u say" because if one doesnt put it in the other wont cus they can cut costs that way. And dont feel bad ps3 people xbox 2(there changing to ATI) isnt going to backwards compatible and there not gonna put in a HD unless ps3 does and if the differnce between teh margin of money made without out the drive is greater than the amount of people not buying because of no harddrive equals NO HD. I know I cried too.
