Monitor blinks to black when I scroll the mouse

Hi, This is my first posting, I'm a newbie. I have a computer at home that is stumping me. It's a PII 500 Mhz, 128 MB Ram, Win 98. I can't give you all the specs, because I'm at the office. If needed, I'll get them tonight and post them tomorrow.
Over the last few weeks the monitor started blinking to black when you use the mouse to scroll down. It will also blink to black for no apparant reason, no scrolling, etc. I've tried running scandisk, but no luck, scandisk says it was interrupted 10 times. I've chkd the task manager, there's nothing extraneous running.
Here's what I've tried. New mouse, new mouse drivers. No improvement. New CPU fan, no improvement. New add'l CPU exhaust fans, no improvement. Could it be a power supply issue? I've also run virus scan, no known viruses found, but hey there are new ones every day.
Any ideas?

Can you post your hardware such as your monitor, your video card, and what mouse your using. I do not think it is a virus. Sounds like maybe a driver issue, but I am not sure as of this moment.
Now did anything change on your computer to cause the problem. Did you install any hardware or software just before the blinking started. If so, then there could be a conflict happening.
If all else fails and I am sure someone here will have a better idea, you can always try to format the HD and reinstall the operating system and all your drivers. This however should be the last resort.

Thank you for the speedy reply. I'll gather the info tonight and post back tomorrow.

It sounds vaguely like you have some screen saver program that activates when your mouse reaches the edge of the screen. I've seen that before. Are you sure you don't have some hidden programs running there?

Hmmm...might be a power management issue also. You might want to go into your Control Panel folder, select Power Options, and make sure you have everything set to "never".
Kdr Kane also has a very good point. It just might be a screen saver running in the background.

Thank you both. I don't have a screen saver running in the background, and I've checked out the advanced power management. Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to ck my vid card, etc. last night. I did realize that this started happening around the time my son installed a SIM game. So, I'm going to uninstall that, ck my video drivers and see what's up.
I am so glad I've found this site! You all are terrific. Thanks for the help, I'll let you know how it goes.
