well today was a bad day......i was using net send and sent a message to the workgroup thinking it was just people in that class and it went to a few ramdom other people and all the message contained was "hey" and i got suspended for 5 days!!!! my first time ever having any trouble with the school.
were they right to do so?

Well, I guess they had a point ... you shouldn't be using that heavily abused feature, especially when you aren't exactly sure how it works ... it sends messages to everyone in the entire network ...
They suspended you because if they didn't, everyone else in your class (and other classes) will be using the net send command because they will know that it is "okay" to send popups like that anytime...
They suspended you to make an example

but suspending to make an example is not fair. And there are many workgroups at school and some teachers were not on the right one they were supposted to be in and i ment only to send to my workgroup but a few of the teachers got it that were on wrong work group.
they r trying to say i damaged the network and computers, is this even possilbe with net send? i know i did not but they willl find some virus in the school soon and blame that on me as well

Well, it really depends. If there was ever a rule before about not doing that, then they had a right to do so. Still though, I think 5 days is a little harsh. I remember back in the day I went to a middle school that used imacs. I was bored one day in "tech" class after finishing the big project in about 10 minutes, so i started messing around with the desktop icons. I changed them all to the same icon (the mac HD one), and forgot to change it back at the end of class. I got a "-10". And put it this way: You get a -5 for setting the chapel on fire.
Everyone over-reacts to tech "crimes" in my opinion. I would have been happy to have helped them with something, but whatever.
So don't worry about it man. You're not alone situation.

...-5 for setting the chapel on fire? dare i ask?
but as to suspending you to make an example, of course it is not fair but sometimes it must be done. all you do is say "okay, see you in five days" take a list of the work you will miss so you can do it in those five days and not use net send again. making a big thing of this isnt going to help you any. sometimes to only way to win is to not play (thank you matthew broderick)

fibbi- you never told me you got a -10.
Anyway... I really do not think that your school had the right to suspend you for 5 days for using a chat client over the LAN. While I can understand why they do not want this to happen (my school has the same policy), -5 is radical, especially sence it seems they never mentioned any rules about using the app first. Obviously they have to do something but 5 days?? Damn.

true, if you did that on a job, youd be fired.
if you had sent something meaningful, you would have gotten yelled at at the most, unless you werent supposed to use that feature at all. you spammed the entire workgroup with "hey". thats considered abuse by most systems.
you have a nice 5 day vacation at a lovely time of year. enjoy it.

yeah it wasent just me they suspended it was 4 people total and some of them did not even send a message, they just wanted to get everyone that knew about it it seems like.
and now i have a quilty feeling if i play a game over my long (9 day) weekened
man this sux

Hey, dont worry about it too much. It seems like it was not really your fault, I mean they should have been more clear about the use of the service.
As for the other people, they can fend for themselves. Get a copy of counter-stike if you dont already have it and have some good honest fun.

At my school all the students to sign something when they enter middle school (and continue to high school) so that they will be allowed to use the school computers, and that contract also says that they must use it for educational purposes. So, yea... if its not for school purposes the school should have the right to suspend u for days even though it seems harsh.

it could have been worse:
if you had taken to wearing black, reading army weapon manuals, and hanging out in the cafeteria mumbling about how the guys on the football team are a bunch of bullys and you can't take it anymore. You would probably be in prison now or at the very least your home computer seized as evidence you were plotting some sort of domestic terrorist activity.
you are lucky they haven't sent you to some secret school problem reprogramming (your behavior) class. Best not to rock the boat anymore by complaining about a raw deal. Students don't have any rights. The Supreme Court keeps ruling in favor of the Schools.
I suggest you become a stepford student. You can bet they have a Patriot Act Eye on you. It's probably already in your folder.(the secret one that follows you all your life).
Expect some future employer who has government contracts to bring it up in your first real job interview. "are you aware your school records state that you attempted to corrupt the school network and incite a school wide demonstration by students, the code word being "Hey".
Fact or Fiction? It's your life dude. Only time and a continued far right reactionary presence will tell. Here in Missouri we scare our children into being good by whispering two names, Bond and Ashcroft.

Some schools are really strict about network use, others not. In middle school, our network was just our room. So i got past the firewall, and into admin account and disabled the network backflow and watcher on my computer, downloaded a few games, and reset it. The teacher had no clue, and when i told him at the end of the year he laughed his ass off and said hes take better care on security.
In High school, the network spanned all campus. I didn't do anything michevious (They were more on the ball there....), only send an e-mail to my mother telling her I'd be late. Well, the net admin comes and tells my teacher, and they flip on me. "Netwok is to be only used for education purposes, not for personal", and so on. I guess its all in the school....

In HS the administration woulda freaked for something like that, but i knew the technology head and he woulda just told me to stop heh.
that seems kinda harsh punishment for you, but if they really wanna crack down on stuff like that i guess they did what they had to... right or wrong..

yeah at my school the admin woman is not very smart at all, people have kazaa on those computers and we play cs a lot (during class) and no one knows. ive been doing the netsend for like over a year and this was frist time i sliped up. When she cought me i thought she had know everything but only knew the message that poped up on her computer.

It all depends on your network admin i suppose, how competant he or she is...
For some reason, middle schools are easier to get past then high school. Middle school, they think your kids, and underestimate you.... theres also the factor of stupidity... Our Entire class played AoE, counter-strike, whatever all year, and he had no clue.
But high school.... wtf do you think changed?
Posted by: Gerbilo
dunno...
in HS our admin installed AOE2 for us
was listed as "spanish exercies 2" on the start menu(still had the AOE2 icon though), no one ever figured it out except for the kids that were told.
