WinME or 98?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have been using winME for some time now but recently reinstalled it and it has given me a few problems. I have read alot of abuse about ME n think maybe i should change to 98. Only thing is a find it a little out of date. I would use 2000 but hardware like my printer n modem r old and drivers are not available. Will 98 be considerably better for resources etc than ME?

your modem should work for windows 2000, i would use win2k and buy a new printer. as for system resources you need to tell us what you have first.

WinME can be configured to run well. It takes a little doing.

The single most noticeable improvement can be made by controlling startup programs, read this page:

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm

There are many things that can be done to improve performance, setting a permanent swapfile and using a good defrag program that is capable of moving it to the outside edge of the hdd for faster access is helpful. If you have enough RAM, enabling conservative swapfile use also helps. Cacheman is a very good program, but only use its' settings and don't run the program in the background or at startup. You can experiment with different settings and find the best ones for your system.

I have uninstalled parts of my WinME OS using a program called OppCom (Windows ME optional component maker), but I don't have the link in my bookmarks, will find it and repost. I have also renamed some files from DOS to stop more unnecessary background processes.

My WinME installation is very stable, no lockups or freezes in many months. Resources stay high all day, seldom fall below 80% (with all programs closed) even after a long day of computing. I do try to find programs that release resources well when they are closed.

I do have one oddity; I have two notepad entries in the open with>choose program list. Don't know how that happened, LOL.

OppCom link: http://www.beta10.com/oppcomme.htm

If you use this program, please follow directions exactly. I would recommend reinstalling PCHealth after uninstalling it so System File Protection will continue to function.

Also if you have a webcam, don't uninstall wmiexe.exe, I think it is necessary if you use a webcam.

Here is another great site for learning to tweak WinME:

Just don't get too carried away.
