NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Gov. George Pataki signed Thursday the nation's first state-wide ban on using hand-held cell phones while driving, saying the practice of driving with one hand on the wheel and the other on the phone posed "an enormous threat to public safety."
If a driver is caught using a cell phone, a fine of $100 will be issued. Get the full story here.

a huge threat huh?? according to most states dunno about new york but i do know about texas distracted driving is already against the law. it doesnt matter if ur caught masterbating or talking on a cell phone it is illegal in everyplace ive ever been to drive while distracted. ie talking on cell phones changeing diapers putting on makeup etc.
but the point of all this anti-cell phone crap is kind of silly since according to AAA there were 284000 distracted driving accidents last year and 1.5% of those involved cell phones. giving us a grand total of 4290 accidents last year involving cell phone usage NATION WIDE!! if u divide that by 50 inculding alaska and hawaii that comes to 85.8 accidents per state each year. that last bit about 85 accidents a state is kinda wacked for a statistic since it is very unliekly that alaska had the same amount as california but it does illustrate how few cell phone accidents there are. but the fact remains that the VAST majority of accidents are not cell phone usage. this number includes both fatal and non-fatal accidents.
personal anecdotes no matter how sensational is not proof of a trend al it proves is that one thing happened once to certain people. what gets me is why there is a fervor over cell phones of all things. not following the speed limit and alcohol abuse are much more important factors in traffic accidents than cell phones.
just because there is a cell phone being used is not really a good indicator of accident causation since included in these statistics are also cases that involve person hit while parked using a cell phone. so to truly say that cell phones cause accidents is a false assumption. there is some data to show that it could be a factor. but 99.99% of all accidents the particapents were wearing clothes. so does it also follow that clothing causes accidents?? just because phones are a factor doesnt mean they are the cause.
but out of the 6,000,000 plus accidents last year those that involved cell phones 4,290 is hardly a national or even statewide crisis.

it's politics, what do you expect, coherent logical and useful things to come from it?
