Interesting (for me anyways)

A few secs ago I was browsing the forums and came across a thread about probs with classic Diablo and B.net. Read the responses and one was supposedly from MattM, a Blizz employee. Are Blizz now taking notice of this site again? and if it is truly MattM maybe we can pump him for info on D2 1.10, the rest of the orc campaign and WoW

thats not a blizzard employee
Posted by: NightMage
ahhh so what are the rules around someone impersonating a Blizz employee?
He claims to be one.

Hey, I'm sure that the people have already helped ya, but if you need any proffessinal assistance on this, you may E-mail support@blizzard.com with your problem. I am sorry, I'd like to, but I can not give out direct E-mails to tech support representitives...I did it once and got in major trouble from blizzard. Hope it helps...a bit.

He doesn't directly say it but his sig implies it. I didn't realise the spelling mistakes he made in his post either until just now

OPEN TECH SUPPORT TEAM
OPEN TECH SUPPORT TEAM
not blizzard tech support

Are you saying that you won't do anything about it because this is OTS and not BTS... or are you saying that he is a member of the OTS staff?
If it's the latter, look at it, it says USWest Open Tech Support Team, Battle.net

No I'm not going to do anything about it... Open Tech Support isn't limited to this site, keep in mind the name is from the Blizzard service, NOT the other way around.

OMG!! He named the realm he's located on, AND THE ONLINE SERVICE OF WHICH THE REALM IS ON!
Posted by: NightMage
Ok I can see we're having a little bit of confusion going on here...
my evidence: He claims he is not allowed to give out personal email addresses of Blizz Tech Support Staff. He claims to be a part of the USWest Open Tech Support Team. Not that he plays on the USWest Realm, but that he works on the Realm.

Where on earth did I say anything about who used Open Tech Support first?? What I was trying to say just to clear this up is:
is the reason why you won't do anything because this is OpenTechSupport.net and not Battle.net Open Tech Support.... OR.... because he is an OpenTechSupport.net Staff Member. This last option being cancelled out now because I know he isn't a Staff member here.
I know this may sound patronising or whatever but people here don't seem to take the time to read posts properly at times...

A Blizzard rep wouldn't screw around playing these stupid games.
They would either remain completely anonymous through a regular handle like you and I, or just lurk the site and not register like they used to..
Use your head, I mean, if you were working for a huge, huge video game company, would you want to start up a lot of commotion and publicity on some volunteer site? Which would probably lead to your e-mail address and PM's being constantly flooded while the site suffers a lot of loss in their original premise because all people wanna do is talk to the rep?
Even if they did want to become really involved in the site, I'm positive they'd PM or E-Mail laggy first..

the wall hurt my head
he is not claiming to be an employee of blizzard. he does voluntary tech support in the Open Tech Support channel, as many here do. Many of us have the email addresses of blizzards tech support staff, we dont go handing them out.

Thanks Red, that's all someone had to say...
I can't believe a topic I started off reasonably light hearted got turned into something so nasty...
All of this could have been avoided in 9:35s first reply.

i thought his 2rd post(see above) summed it up perfectly- rude but perfectly

Well I was under the impression that by Open Tech Support Team he meant an employee of Blizz that is assigned to the Open Tech Support Forum.

The entire point of the open tech support channel is that it is USERS helping other USERS. Blizzard staffs the BLIZZARD tech support channel.

This is an open channel where you can get help on technical problems from other users. To talk to Blizzard's technical support group, use the Blizzard Tech Support channel.

I'm guessing I could explain myself to death and it wouldn't make a difference. And as I said it's all over, the deal with it was explained to me and I now understand.

No, it wouldn't matter, because the simple fact is that you are mistaken, and because of that, people corrected you. You can talk all day if you want, it won't change anything. Regardless of what you may have construed his posts as, the general concensus was that he wasn't a blizzard employee, nor was he trying to impersonate one.
edit: Now if you'll take some personal advice, let the matter drop and save some face.

Just to play the devil's advocate here:
1.) It is easy to pose as a Blizzard rep anywhere. However, MattM, for one thing, didn't claim to be a Blizzard rep, especially since the email address he advertises in his sig clearly shows he isn't.
2.) People often employ ways of making themselves appear more important than they really are. Sometimes they exaggerate, sometimes they fabricate. But giving out the direct email addresses of Blizzard support reps would be unethical, to say the least, if he did even know them. I myself know of the email addresses of at least three people who work at Blizzard, but this doesn't mean I should advertise them so I would look more credible.
3.) The last (and only) time Blizzard has ever "supported" this site's cause was when they linked to it from their old support forums (along with thehelper.net). That was ages ago, before they revamped their forum script. The Blizzard people only appreciate sites that actively and effectively promote their products, like DiabloII.Net for instance, and they don't really have the time or motivation to support a site devoted to fixing problems in their games.
As I said before, I know some Blizz people but NONE of them have ever posted here... what more for those that I don't know
4.) OTS.Net is not the Battle.net police. In fact, the only things that connect OTS.net to the OTS channel on bnet are the two subforums for D2 and War3 ... OTS.Net has not been a "Blizzard-centric" site for a long time and the only remaining ties to its Blizzard origin is merely the name. Nothing else.
So apparently we cannot (and will not) do anything about what happens in OTS or BTS channels ... also, since I log onto USEast all the time, I can easily call myself "Canis Lupus, USEast Open Tech Support Team, Battle.Net" merely due to the fact that (a) I log onto USEast and (b) I hang out in the OTS channel. There is no "official" Blizzard-sanctioned Realm Team in the OTS channel, and nor will there ever be. These are all unofficial titles and don't hold much in terms of potential credibility. For example, it would be absurd to call, say, SecureBOT as the "Chief OTS Representative" by virtue of his name being always in the channel and always near the top of the list.
The quirk about the OTS channel is that anyone can provide help there, so labelling one's self as an "official" problem solver in the channel is brought about either by a heightened sense of enthusiasm to help, or the desire to feel special.
5.) The only "Open Tech Support Team" I recognize right now are the people who visit this site and help people out in the Support Forums. That's how it was in the halcyon days of the OTS channel, where people just help without boosting their own egos in the process.
In ending, I would say that I don't mind this Matt.M helping people out. More power to him. Neither do I mind that he considers himself a part of the OTS "team" in the bnet channel. In fact, as long as he delivers splendidly, I don't give a rat's ass if he says he's the president of the United States
Hope that clears everything up ... and I also hope we stop making such a big fuss about such a trivial and silly matter...

As much as my better judgement tells me not to reply, I have to.
I have admitted I was wrong, I was merely explaining after that why I thought what I did, I did not say that he should publish the email addresses to prove himself, as I could understand why he wouldn't, there is also a OTS team who are employees of Blizz that operate in the OTS Forum on the Battle.net website, I didn't realise that there were groups that had formed on the Battle.net servers that were OTS teams.
What I'm trying to say is I didn't have the info to go "oh hey he must be part of the volunteer OTS teams on the servers". And when someone tells you that "they're not a Blizzard employee" first thought is imposter. So I apologise to everyone especially MattM for my ignorance.
