Windows XP Update question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I want to do a clean install from 98 to XP, my colleague bought the update CD. Can I do a clean install from the update CD if I do not have the original 98 CD that I installed from? Also does the update CD prompt to reformat the hard drive which is what I want to do. THANKS

Traditionally you can install the upgrade cd from a blank harddrive, but it'll ask for the win98 disk as proof at some point during the install. I'm not sure if this applies to winxp though.

It will give you an option to choose which partition you wish to install to, and I believe you can choose to format it at that point, if I remember coorect.

I assume that what you really want to do is upgrade to windows XP from windows 98 using a windowsXP upgrade CD. If that being the case then you cannot format the drive but you have the option to convert to ntfs.

also the Full version of XP allows a clean or upgraded installation.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply ediot
I actually want to reformat, then install WinXP, however have the upgrade CD and not the old 98 CD
It's an issue at work where I am recently employed and the computer was purchased at a store that refurbishes computers for resell.

In that case, they the people that re-furbish the computers might have copied the windows cabinet files on to the hard drive. If you have an addition harddrive you can install it as a slave or second master and copy the cab files to it. Next you can re-format the drive create a new directory for the cab file on the newly formated drive and copy the windows setup files to it. Run windows setup from the directory and that shold takes care of that.
