As some of you may have already guessed, I am a counter-strike fanatic. The game is wonderful and becoming more popular than ever. But whenever I actually play online there is always one very troubling thing. No one every uses their pistols. There have been countless times where I have been in a firefight with someone and we both drain the clips of our primary weapons, except while he is reloading, I pull out my trusty p228 and pop him a few to the head. Boom. Counter-Terrorists Win!
I have concluded from the times that I have seen people use pistols that the counter-strike community simply does not know how to use them properly. After all, pistols are probably the most difficult weapon to master. This guide works to address the problems that many people have using these small devices. This guide does not cover the Desert Eagle because it is so drastically different from the rest of the pistols. I would also not recommend using this guide with the gloc because you will die. Let me say this now so that I do not have to worry about it anymore, the gloc sucks, it is weak and does not pierce armor and it has no redeeming features other than its free.
How To Aim - Although all weapons work on the same principal of pull trigger, kill person; not all are the same. As you no doubt have noticed, the pistols have much more kickback then the SMGs or Riffles baring the AK-47. On of the major problems that people encounter with the pistols is how to compensate properly for the added kick. The best method is to aim for the chest on the first shot, then fire about three successive shots. You will notice that each shot will land progressively further up the body with the last hitting the head of you had true aim. With three body shots and 1 head, you have caused enough damage to kill your target. It will take time to master this procedure so one of the best ways to practice is on a private server without any players. To do this, start a LAN game and make sure that you have the duck selected as your spray. I recommend the dust map because it has the best layout for solo practice. What you need to do is pick a box that is about player level and spray the duck. The distance between the top of the duck and the bottom of the duck is about the same amount of space between the chest and the head of a player. Try to do the four shot succession on the duck stationary. Then try it walking, and then running, and finally jump/crouching.
A method of Fire - If there is one point that I can drive home the most it is this: PISTOLS ARE NOT AT ALL LIKE SMGs, THEY MUST BE FIRED MORE CAUTISOULY AND WITH BETTER ACURACY. When you spot a foe, don't just start shooting. Take some time to acquire the target before giving away your position with misguided shot. When you get your target, fire in a burst, rest burst pattern. Firing a constant stream will just guarantee a miss. Again practice on the duck until you can hit the target in all possible combinations of movement.
Tactical Benefits - Pistols are extremely useful due to several benefits that they provide. The first is time. It is much faster to pull out your pistol than to reload your primary. So when you are in a fight and you both run out, your get about 5 seconds of free time to get the kill if you decide to use your pistol. Second, pistols have a huge kick to the person being hit, meaning that the target will not be able to aim and fire with any degree of accuracy when you hit him. Third is that pistols, except the gloc, do the most damage per shot then all of the other weapons baring the sniper rifles. This means that you have to fire less and ultimately hang around for less time than a SMG wielding enemy. Final is that the pistols are the lightest projectile weapon. This allows you to move faster than your opponent giving you the advantage in dodging. Your ability to move from point A to point B faster also affords you the ability to stop for a second or two so that you can get your aim dead on. All of these advantages of the pistol when combined with proper use should give you the leg up that you need to quickly climb up to the top of the server list.
Putting It All Together - Perhaps it sounds like the easiest step but it is by far the hardest. Here is where most people fail. Being able to fire properly and aim well is great but what happens when your target is no longer a fixed duck? Simple, you die. When trying to master the skill of pistol shooting, you need to practice off-line, because if you don't you will be embarrassed and frustrated. The best thing to do is start on unarmed, moving targets. To do this, grab a copy of POD-Bot (available from http://csnation.counter-strike.net), and start a server. Next, press = to get the bot menu, then remove all bots by pressing 7. Now, create all bots on the opposite team by pressing = then 5 and then the number for the opposing team. Finally, press = then 8 then 1 to set all bots to knife mode. Practice with these for while until it is easy to get them without missing more than twice. Now by using the weapons menu (= then 8) give them pistols, then SMGs then Rifles, then all weapons. When you can beat all of the bots with just your pistol than you should be ready for online play.
I hope you found this guide helpful is all ways possible, see you around!

I liked this a lot, I disagree with small bits. Namely, the burst fire pistol tactic should not be used with the Desert Eagle. But otherwise it is quite good!
