RIAA Sues 261, Says Thousands More to Come

The Recording Industry of America has filed copyright infringement suits against 261 P2P users. The lawsuits span the networks of Kazaa, Grokster, Gnutella, iMesh, and Blubster. The RIAA claims that most of the users were sharing over 1,000 songs, and the maximum fine per violation can reach $150,000. It's unlikely damages will go that far, and the RIAA says that they have already reached settlements of $3,000 with some users. Of course, they won't be so nice to those looking to settle now.
The RIAA also says that those users who just download were not targeted, obviously in an attempt to get users to unshare their files -- effectively killing the network. And if you feel remorse for your P2P sins, the RIAA has convientently provided an amnesty program by the name of Clean Slate. The rules require that you delete the files you have downloaded illegally, promise not to download any other copyrighted works (if you do, you may be subject to higher fines), and sign the Clean Slate Affadavit in the presence of a notary public. The privacy policy of the RIAA goes as follows:
Information provided on the Clean Slate Program Affidavit will be used solely in connection with conducting and enforcing the Clean Slate Program. Information will not be used for marketing, promotional or public relations purposes. Information will not be made public or given to third parties, including individual copyright owners, except if necessary to enforce a participant’s violation of the pledges set forth in the Affidavit or otherwise required by law.
Being one of the biggest stories in some time on the P2P front, there are articles and comments everywhere. If you want to know more, a good start would be to read the stories at C|Net or Reuters and the EFF.

Theres a guy in a city just about 1 hour from me who got hit with $36 million from the RIAA. He was sharing over 9000 songs.

That's Insane! How could someone possibly pay that kind of fine?
Let's just say we divide those 9000 songs into full cd's that would have 12 songs on them. That would = 750 cd's. Ok, 750 cd's at let's say $15 per cd would = $11,250. Ok, to = that fine that means $36,000,000/$11,250 = 3,200 people would have to download all 9000 songs he shares. Damn, that's A hell of alot of downloading!

I dont know how many people downloaded off them or how much it was per share. But with the fines of up to $150,000 PER song shared, there could have been any number of people downloading them.
I read he had a 6mb upload line as well. The guy is like 45 years old too. Hes fighting it right now I believe.

LOL
Hopefully there will be a judge who gets sick of looking at these ridiculous damage suits in the millions and he'll just say, screw it, and throw them all out. Probably what it will take is for some murderer to commit a crime, but not be held for trial because of all these petty lawsuits... it's generally how it ends up working.
