hey..... is it possible to move my OS (win XP) to my new and better HD without reformatting or anything (both HD are installed)..
my primery HD (samsung SV2042D) 5400 RPM. is formatted in FAT 32
and only supports ATA 66
the new and better 1 (IC35L060AVER07-0) 7200RPM. is installed as SLAVE and has 2 partitions FAT 32 and NTFS... and supports ATA 100
What do I do ?

i know its definately possible to copy your old hard drive os and all to a newer drive bit for bit. if the newer drive has stuff on it, youll have to move that stuff to a secondary partition on that drive and clear out a primary space for the os, format that space probably (just to be safe) then clone the old drive os into that new space. im pretty sure the newest partition magic can handle all that.
youd want your operating system to be on an ntfs partition. and probably your media also unless you need it accessable by linux.
if you just need to copy os to a new drive and have it be bootable, there are plenty of programs that do just that that have free versions.
but it sounds like an opertune time to reinstall just to clean up bitrot.

its possible, but its not a great idea. youll just be copying all the corruptions and junk lying around over to the new drive. you can format just one partition, of course, and move everything you want to keep to the other one temporarily. but a clean install is the best idea.

so no matter what..... its allways better just to reinstall OS to the new HD ? is that what your saying ?
thats what i rather avoid, cose there's so much update stuff i have to go trough again, but if thats the best, its the best

its the best route to go when reasonably convenient. and its highly recommended if your previous install is more than a couple months old. better to format and install now, then have to do it in 6 months when your drive is full of other stuff, and your smaller drive doesnt have the ability to boot the computer if necessary.

While in a perfect worl re-installing is the best option, so that you get a clean build, its not always desireable, because we all get attached to all that junk we collect and can't possibly live without
I think the solution you are looking for is either Norton Ghost or possible Partition Magic.

You may want to pick up a copy of Norton Ghost. Which backups your HDD complete and can be transferred on to the new HDD. This is also a good program if you plan on doing major upgrades because u can retrieve your old info. Ghosting the HDD can take anywhere from 3-5 CD-R.

I'm pretty sure Kane's talking about Windows Product Activation. By either moving the OS or a fresh install, more than likely you will have to reactivate XP due to that being such a drastic hardware change within your computer.

yeah... i guess so ... ty....
what i'm gonna do is this.... (to avoid any risk)
1. burn a copy of all my downloads/updates
2. format/clean both HD
and re- install XP on ntfs
and once again thx for all the replies
