Most people will be coded green and sail through. But up to 8 percent of passengers who board the nation's 26,000 daily flights will be coded "yellow" and will undergo additional screening at the checkpoint, according to people familiar with the program. An estimated 1 to 2 percent will be labeled "red" and will be prohibited from boarding. These passengers also will face police questioning and may be arrested.

Does that mean people can be arrested for trying to board a plane if they have a criminal background?

I saw a story the other night on local news where a guy was going through a metal detector at the airport, and as he stepped through, he began to sneeze. Something on his pants made the detector go off. As he was sneezing and the little beep went off, 2 security guards pulled their guns because they thought he was trying to "run through". They put him to the ground and cuffed him. He missed his flight(going to his sisters wedding), his baggage was completely looked through and he was held for 12 hours for questioning. All because he sneezed at the wrong time.

A bit much IMO.

I think it has more to do with ethnic background, more likely than not.

people still fly?

Posted by: Null Actor

I've flown more in the past two years than any time before.

Posted by: Phate

Ditto.

Probably because I'm learning how to operate a plane.
(Can't say fly because then I'd sound like a terrorist )

Same.

I haven't flown much lately but it's not because of being scared, hell, i wanna fly someplace, i just dont have the money or the reason too hehe.

This whole thing about airports is spiraling waaay out of control. I think the TSA had been waiting for 9/11 for years just so they could impliment all this crap.

I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.. again. Right? Who knows. It is a bit much, but hey, it might save some lives..

Posted by: uh...ok

Yep, especially with the college thing, I've been flying more than ever.

Too bad it costs just as much to go home as it does to go to Europe.
*curses under his breath*

I have a pacemaker. I have two coronary stents. An artificial artery. and I walk with a cane. I have to carry cards that identify these items in a way they (the HS airport nazis) can understand. To do this, I have to arrive at the airport at least two hours ahead of when most people do. Find someone safe looking to approach security and advise them of my situation. I then get a full body search. They take apart my cane. Since they can't use a wand on me without killing me, they do another search after the first one. Any luggage I have is sniffed by dogs for explosives or drugs. all this just to get on the damn shuttle bus to the terminal. don't even get me started about what happens when I get there.

I dunno ... this system, like most other systems employed under the name of Homeland Security, is yet another way to encroach on a person's basic rights in order to provide the people with a feeling of psuedo-security.

The racial profiling -- err, I mean, the color rating system -- does not account for terrorists who have no criminal records (like the ones who rammed the WTC), and have all the necessary papers to conduct their "business" in and out of the country ... this would also serve to further promote alienation in this country.

But sure, if this assures temporary security to the American people (or helps them sleep better at night), by all means just take away some more basic rights to attain it. It's not like it's the first time it has happened with our government in the last couple of years anyway

I feel ever so much safer now. just the idea that some overzealous nut thats employed by the federal government can detain pretty much anyone at will, followed by a secret hearinng if youre lucky, leading to a nice secret detention for months on end gives me the warm fuzzies.

yup. yup. dont gotta worry about those billions of hijackings anymore.

Bingo. They're called sleeper cells for a reason.

Is there really CTU like on 24 or is that just made up for the show?

Posted by: redwench

its pretty rare that a convicted hijacker or terrorist is going to board a plane under his own name. the only people they keep off tend to be unfortuantely afflicted with the same name as a criminal. the real criminal is flying under another name.

Wrong. That's the bullshit opinion that allows the US government to keep wittling away your freedoms. Most of what they do doesn't make you safer. At all. However, under the 'better safe than sorry' excuse, everyone lets it happen.

Posted by: redwench

better safe than sorry doesnt really apply to events with low probability. or we would all be tooling down the highways at 10 miles an hour, aspirin would be a prescription medication, cigarettes and alcohol would be illegal, residential swimming pools would be illegal, etc.
