no video with media player/divx player

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

i seem to be unable to get video using media player or divx player. i have installed many different video codecs inc xvid/divx and mpeg4 codecs and have had no success. i am running xp home, and have perfect sound, and all the files ive loaded seem to run and play fine, you can hear the sound fine, but no video. any help would be greatly appreciated.

im kinda guessing you get a black box where the video should be. take a screenie of the player playing the video, then open it in paint and move the paint windows around the screen, tell us what happens.

im guessing its a hardware overlay issue. the way video players work, is that windows doesnt draw the video, windows send the normal windows screen to your "video card" on your way to the monitor. thats where the video card overlays the movie onto your windows environment then it appears on your monitor.

for a temp fix turn your video hardware acceleration completely down to 0 in the advanced monitor troubleshooting tab of the system properties. this tells windows not to use/expect your video card to draw the picture, so windows draws it. though with avi codecs it might be hard on your system. test it out with mpg files first.

If it's an avi file, open it with GSpot. It'll show you the video (and audio) codec you need to play the file.

so was i completely way off on this one?

thanks fellas, thats what i was thinking. ive used gspot quite a lot previously, and seem to have all the codecs needed to play various mpegs aswell as avi files, but it still doesnt seem to want to play. Ocean was right about the black box (slightly lighter than the background) where the video should be. have i installed the codecs wrongly perhaps, or something more serious?

following on from the last post, most of the codecs ive downloaded seem to automatically install the codecs. do you then have to move the codecs to a specific file or is it done automatically? also how do you reinstall media player? is it on the xp cd?

Posted by: Outlaw

Most codecs install automatically, no need to move anything. Have you installed any codec packs? They usually do more harm than good. Try uninstalling those if you have them. It's better to install the seperate codecs, you probably won't need many anyway.

Is it just a few files that don't play or doesn't anything work?

I don't think it's possible to reinstall media player. It probably wouldn't help much either. This kinda problems are usually due to bad codecs.

Cheers. i have installed a few codec packs actually, can delete them if theyre not much good. and yeah, theres no video on any files (mainly divx movies etc) that ive tried, perfect sound though. it seems that the files laod and run fine, but i just cant see the video images. any thoughts?

Yeah, just uninstall all those codec packs. Then try ffdshow, it's the only thing that I know of that plays most video files without installing a bunch of useless crap with it. It's not perfect, but comes pretty close. It's also easily disabled/uninstalled if you decide not to use it.

Also try disabling the video hardware acceleration, what Ocean said in his first post.

also when you make any changes to windows codecs or other codecs you have to reboot your system before you change codecs, because windows explorer locks any session-used codecs from being uninstalled/reinstalled. but i still think it has nothing to do with codecs.

having tryed all that was suggested yesterday (cheers by the way lads) it still is not working, the same faded black box appears where the video should be. the majority of files i am trying to watch are xvid and divx ones, and both those codecs are installed and working fine.G-spot confims this. Am starting to think Ocean is on the right track, but ran out of time to do it last night, and now a 10 hour work shift is in the way!

aside from the temp fix or turning off harware acceleration in the advanced monitor section of control panel, is there a more permanent way of telling windows this is now the norm so to speak?

also, the same thing happened to a friend of mine, but he had no problems connecting to the internet, and media player seemed to locate the codecs for him. i dont see this as a problem if i can manually install the codecs offline, but is the fact that i cant connect to the internet for more than a few seconds linked in any way? (although thanks to this forum that'll be fixed by tonight)

thinking about it actually, this is the first decent grpahics card ive had in a while. because i use maya a lot, it is set to display two monitor feeds, but i have as yet not connected the other monitor as i havent picked it up yet. could this be the problem?, as i seem to have all the codecs and setup correct. could i be hearing the sound on my main monitor, while the video is being diverted to the as yet non-existant monitor?

any ideas, or do people still think its a display adapter problem, and turning off hardware acceleration will do it? (although wont that make the video choppy? as it did on my older pcs/graphics cards?)

Yes, that could be the problem. The monitor you're using now must be set up as the primary display device. The video stream will only be played on the primary one, unless you disable video hardware acceleration.
