XP Pro Update Install Errors

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I can not install any Windows updates (either from the update site or manually after downloading) on a Dell laptop (not mine) that has SP1a. It had many nasty critters (3 viruses, 6 trojans). I've removed those and scanned it with both Norton & PC-cillian (House-call) and every thing comes up clean. The Windows Update site scans correctly and then downloads fine, but when I try to install any of the patches I get the folowing message, everytime for every update I try to install.

The instruction at "0x7ffa302d" referenced at "0x71ab5690". The memory could not be "read".

The hexidecimal values are exactlly the same everytime. I've run just about every utilitiy (anti-trojan, worm fixes) I can think of and nothing turns up, but I still can't update. I can't, for various reasons, resort to the nuclear option (reformat, re-install).

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
