Windows XP Networked with Windows 98se?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

In my network it's me, my bro and my dad. Me and my bro both use Windows 98SE, my dad uses Windows XP. We've run all the little networking things yet my dad won't show up on the network. Is there a way to get him on it?

If you haven't already, run the home network wizzard on the xp machine, and when prompted, make a network setup floppy disk. Then, use the floppy disk made from the xp machine to run the network wizzard on the 98 machines.

XP home can't communicate with windows 98, only XP pro can, IIRC.

I guest your dad is using Xp - Home Edition. You can run the setup using

static ip and workgroup. Example make your TCP/IP be 192.168.2.1,192.168.2.2 and 192.168.2.3 respectively with a group name "HOME".

Add each user account to the XP computer with their respective user logon password. You can try pinging each computer via each other and so on. Also you might need to run the wizard for networking on Xp.

Good Luck

I don't know where you heard that from. My XP Home OS communicates just fine with 98.

The following is all he should have to do.
Quote:

To create a network setup floppy disk
If you are running the Network Setup Wizard on Windows XP, you must be logged on as an administrator in order to complete this procedure.

Start Network Setup Wizard.
Follow the steps on your screen to configure your home or small office network.
When you come to the page that reads, You're almost done, insert a blank, formatted floppy disk into the drive, and then click Create Disk.
Important

If you have already run the Network Setup Wizard, and did not create the floppy disk, you will need to run it again to create the floppy disk. When you do so, you must enter the same information for your network as you did when you ran the wizard the first time.
Notes

To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections. Under Common Tasks, click Network Setup Wizard.
The Network Setup Wizard can only be run on computers using Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows XP.
Run the wizard on the Windows XP host computer first. The host computer is the one sharing its Internet connection.
Before running the Network Setup Wizard on computers running Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows Millennium Edition, make sure Internet Connection Sharing is disabled on these computers

Straight up from Help and Support Center within a Windows XP Home Machine.

Microsoft's Site has an excellent guide for setting up a home network using XP Home.
