How to stop IE from starting automatically?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I use Mozilla Firebird and have it set as my default browser. I have also removed IE from the installed components list. Yet, it starts automatically every time I start the computer. I've checked config.sys and the startup file and it isn't listed there.

Any idea on how to stop it from starting or to remove it completly?

Note: Running Windows XP Pro system.

Check the Win.ini file (does XP have one?) for any references to it, place a semi colon at the beginning of the line if there is a reference to IE.

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately there's nothing that I can identify in win.ini that refers to IE. I checked the msconfig folders too and found nothing there either...

Can you think of anything else to try?

Thanks,

Hi again,

Sorry, I don't know XP at all, but this program might help you isolate where IE is being called from at startup:

just so you know, IE is intergrated into windows, so if you see something like explorer.exe in the task manager, theres nothing you can do about it.

For the record, explorer.exe is not Internet Explorer, it's the windows shell program. IExplore.exe is actually internet explorer.

Now, if you are talking about a popping up internet explorer window, I'd suggest you check that one of your other programs isn't doing it. MSN/Windows messenger and ICQ will both pop up IE windows if you don't tell them not to, and possibly other programs as well.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. No progress yet but with your help, I'm working on it.

I downloaded the start viewer and it showed two supecious entries, as follows.
%SystemRoot%\system32\ie4uinit.exe
with the full path of:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

and RunDLL32 IEDKCS32.DLL,BrandIE4 SIGNUP
with the full path of:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\>{60B49E34-C7CC-11D0-8953-00A0C90347FF}MICROS

Do you think these are problems? If so, is it safe to delete them entirely from the registry or is there some way to disable them?

Thanks a lot.

1. Do you mean that it starts a browsing window when you start the computer?

2. There is no way to completely remove IE from the computer. The most that you can do is disable it as an internet browser by using the program access and defaults setting in XP sp1. The reason that it cannot ever be removed completely is as Fibbi pointed out, it is fully intigrated into the OS (IE is what is used to display My Computer).

Hi, and thanks for the response.

Yes, an IE browser window opens everytime I start the computer. I understand that you can't remove IE, I just want to control it.

I suposedly have IE disabled and this happens anyway.

How do you go about disabling IE using service pack 1? I may not be able to do this anyway because SP1 was rejected when I tried to install it. (Some error message that I didn't get but having something to do with upgrading from 2K rather than doing a clean install.)

Thanks again.

J

Yeah, i know. I just meant that if seas was seeing that in the task manager, it was just the basic windows explorer. IE is so intergrated that they basically look the same, and use a lot of the same files.

Man, I tried to reinstall IE once. ugh, didn't work too well.
