Good Mother board?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

If I used a AMD 1.33 Thunderbird as the base for a system, what would be a good motherboard and why?

Does any one know a good FAQ on who to build a system from the ground up? I have never built a system before and would like to. I feel comfortable with computer parts and things, but dont know the specifics on what I need or why its better to have this part than that part?

Fred, actually, you can find a guide to building an AMD system right here on this web site..you can find it if you look at the "Resource forums", under "Articles and Guides". The article you want is titles "The Black Athlon Building Guide".

As for good motherboards for that chip…you can’t go wrong with motherboards that either use the AMD 761 chipset if you want to go the route of DDR memory, or the Via KT133A chipset for use with PC133 SDRAM.

I am using an Asus A7V133 that uses the Via KT133A chipset. Both the above chipsets are used with 133 front side buss commonly called 266 FSB due the Athlons clock doubling of the 133FSB.

Actually motherboards from most of the major manufacturers such as Abit, Asus, MSI, Epox, etc…are good products.

If your interested in reading up on motherboards here are some sites to get you started.

hmmm.... ok, well, if its an AMD tbird 1.33, i strongley recomend the ASUS A7M266 if you plan on useing DDR memory, try to avoid the alimagik chipset if you can, as i hear it is a huge pain in the rear.

These are links to what i hace in my system.

ASUS A7M266 Motherboard: http://www.asus.com/products/Mother...m266/index.html

PC2100 DDR Ram: http://www.crucial.com/store/listpa...7M266&x=10&y=20 (the very top one)

CPU: (Since URL is way to long, its an AMD T-Bird 1.33 AXIA core 266FBS

That would cover the baisics, and if you DO get the motherboard i listed, USE JUMPER FREE SETTINGS or your chip will fry because of the highly off voltage listing in the manual (Jumper free lets you choose voltage ect in CMOS, and FYI this mobo has phenix CMOS). Even though the motherboard manual only gose up to 1.2ghz, this mobo will support all the way up to 1.5ghz+, so in the future if you upgrade, all you'd have to buy is a new chip, instead of teh whole new mobo, ram, chip, ect...

In case your wondering, baisically what AXIA cores are is a overclocking workhouse. People have over clocked there 1.33ghz AMD AXIA core TBirs all the way up to 2.3ghz last time i checked (With LN2 cooling of corse).

This is just my 2 cents... but do what you want =)

i prefer the intel boards and cpu the intel i815 with built in 10/100 intel lanpro chip is dirt cheap much cheaper than any amd board. the P3 1k cpu are decent and cheap in price and give good performance.

as for AMD tis a crapshoot to get a decent board i would in that case pretty much follow the athlon building guide to the letter that is posted on this website. but its still a crapshoot in my opinion to get one that runs well. others have different opinions this one belongs to me people have had decent luck with boards from all the major makers just be sure to either order or buy from a local dealer not over the internet when buying a motherboard cpu or ram as it makes returns and exchanges MUCH easier and faster than trying to do that via the postal system. it really isnt worth saving the extra 5$ a part to potential put urself thru the nitemare of returns over the NET.

if ur going to build a AMD go to AMD's website and choose gear based on AMD's recomended hardware list since K7 chipsets are very touchy about what they mix with.

Anything abit or asus based is as good as it gets. Just get one of their boards that suit your tastes.
