Sound card driver problems....

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have my sound chip/board mounted directly onto my motherboard. I downloaded what was supposed to be an upgrade to this driver and it wasn't and now I can't get my sound card to work. ESSSolo 1 PCI, ES1938 is the chip. I found the exact driver .zip and installed it from the ESSTech website and it still doesn't work. I've done everything in Device Manager possible. I removed all profiles and let windows find/install the sound card and still nothing. From my investigating, I think the onboard chips require a BIOS update on top of the regular install. The plug and play is what 99% of the world uses, my computer is over a year old. Onboard sound chips...updating drivers.....have exact driver installed.....device manager shows no conflicts and that it is working properly(sound card).....any program that uses the sound card that normally would show the driver in the drop down window just says "none". Even in Control Panel>Multimedia, the drop down for Audio says "none". Help.

This is a prime example of why I do not like onboard features. They are usually cheap substitutes which tag on to the motherboards original price. I will give some suggestions, and if these do not work, I suggest you purchase a decent motherboard. If are are tight for money, the Soundblaster Live! Value will do, and it can be found as low as $40 on www.pricewatch.com.

Some suggestions:
  1. Uninstall your sound card, and then reboot to proceed to flash your BIOS to the latest version. There should be some brief instructions with your motherboard manual or on their site. Take note of them and you should have no problem.
  2. After returning to Windows, do not install your audio drivers. Cancel Windows when it automatically tries to install them. Move on to install updated motherboard drivers.
  3. Reboot and now install the updated drivers for your onboard sound. If everything goes well, look for any complications (!s) in System - Device Manager.

Good luck.

Got my sound card back, this is what I did. Figuring the place I bought it from used a cheap generic, board mounted sound card and used the cheapest sound drivers possible(the ones that come with Win98SE CD), I deleted the device from device manager but also did a search for all files with ESS and deleted them as well. I then reinstalled Win98 over top and let Windows do it's thing. Just doing the Add/Remove Hardware wasn't enough. I think the reinstall did some other things the basic Add/Remove wouldn't have done like bios stuff and registry stuff and I/O stuff. So now that it's agreed upon my sound card is a cheap generic, how do I properly install the Sound Blaster sound card you recommend?? Thanks.

Installing a Sound Blaster card shouldn't be too hard. First, open up your case and check for an empty PCI slot. Slide the card into the slot (you should not have to use too much force) and boot up Windows. Upon starting, Windows should automatically recognize a new card has been added and ask you for the driver cd.

After checking out everything and making sure the card is working propery, I suggest heading over to Creative's site and downloading the updated drivers. Good luck.
