DVD ROM Speed

I was just wondering, what kind of difference in quality, am I going to see if I upgrade from a 6x DVD Rom to a 16x DVD Rom?

it depends more on ur decoding hardware CPU speed and amount of system ram if u have a crappy cpu 64 megs of ram and software decoding then going to a 16x dvd drive isnt going to make a hell of a lot of difference. on the otehr hand if u have a fast cpu 800mhz+ 128+Ram and hardware decoder board then a 6x dvd player will do just fine. DVD playback has more to do with whats in ur system than what is spinning the DVD. i used to have a 4x dvdrom a P2 400 and 128 ram and playback was just fine since i ran it through a hardware based decoder. that dvd setup went to a friend when i bought a dvd player for my tv

My SYS Specs are as follows:

192 mB RAM
Pentium III 450
(I dunno about trhe decoder card. How can I find that out?)

A faster dvd drive won't have any effect on DVD movies. Any dvd drive 2x or faster will play a dvd movie at the best of it's ability. The only difference will be with dvd roms.

when DVD first shipped out a lot of them shipped with decoder cards. now that the majority of comps sold today are 800mhz plus with a lot of ram dvd hardware decoding has been phased out since the newer cpu are fast enough to decode DVD thru software. finding a dvd decoder board for a slow cpu is going to be problematic since not all boards work with all dvd drives. ur probably best off trying to upgrade ur CPU MB and RAM to get increased DVD performance. but if ur just wanting to watch DVD the money is better spent getting a real DVD player for ur TV
