Gamcube laser lens scratching my game discs?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I was recently playing soul calibur on the game cube. i sometimes heard a weird grinding noise when the game disc was loading. i took out the game disc and saw scratches on it that werent there before. Can the game cube laser lens actually scratch game discs?

The laser cant, but if the disc isnt seated properly, it can wobble and scratch on the plast parts of the gamecube. Make sure your discs are being seated properly and that the part they snap into isnt broken.

ok, thanks, i was just curious about it, cause months ago my game cube fell when someone tripped over the controller, and the mario party 4 game was on. and so i thought the laser lens might of shifted outta place or sumthin, losing its balance. But is the wierd grinding noise that sometimes occurs during loading normal?

Hmm...

Well the actual "laser" that comes out of the lens cant scratch it. But if the lens physically touched the disc, both the lens and the disc would scratch. If that happened though, the cube itself would probably stop reading discs altogether as the lens would be too scratched up. When it fell, its possible that the motor that spins the disc came loose a bit, which is connected to the part that you snap the disc into and its now lower than its supposed to be.

If its under warranty or replacement plan, take it and get a new one.

ok, ill try that, though i never bought a relacement plan, besides, this is a rented game that it sometimes makes that noise on, it never really made this wierd noise on my own games that have no scratches on

Ah, well it could just be the crappy rental games that are causing the noise.

If they are all scratched up, the system could be struggling to read them, causing the lens to move back and forth more than it usually would (thus making more noise than usual).

Something could be wrong with your system, but if what you say about the rental games is true, I would think they are the culprit.

but can the system get damaged if it reads scratched disc that it has a hard time reading?

Posted by: AK47

I dunno.

Might wear out the track that the lens rides on. That happened with the original Playstation.

I dunno man.... you should be fine. I havent heard (m)any complaints about this with the gamecube.

yeah, i know that it wears out the lens on the ps2, cause one of my ps2's started to make scratches on some of my games, and even made two of em freeze(this is of course after it was dropped).

uhh...

to be safe- dont drop your gamecube

Posted by: madman55

i know, but thats the reason why i am concerned about the laser lens and how it reads the disc and all etc. My gamecube already fell. I didnt play games n it for a long time until i thought about renting a game and seeing if itll damage the game or not, this might be dumb but i have worries over consoles that play dvd games.

Does your gamecube grind up any other games?

Posted by: madman55

not that i know of, ive played my own games on it, butit hasnt dont that on them(this is before i was playing the rented game that the grinding rarely happened on)
