Cable Modem Woes

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just got a cable connection last week and I have noticed that,
while having a great data transfer rate, for games, it is not exactly very good. This is because, while most of the time it is working absolutely fine, every once in a while it will just completely stop. This happens in Counterstrike, this happens in Starcraft. The waiting for players screen will come on until it gets to 24 seconds left EVERY SINGLE TIME and then go back to the game like nothing ever happened, then in about ten minutes it will do it again. Does anybody else have this problem? If so, did you fix it? If you did, how?

Computer Info -

Processor - Pentium III 801 MHz
RAM - 192 MB
Hard Disk Space - 9.77 Gigs
Video Card - Winfast Geforce2 MX
Network Card - Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet Adapter NDIS5 Driver
Operating System - Microsoft Windows ME U.S. English 4.90

Check to make sure your network card and video card are on different IRQs. This caused mine to lock up the cable modem at random.

Also, turn off any firewalls that you might have.

uhhh how would i check this, and how would i change it if i were to check it?

Who's your cable provider?

I Win98, to check if your network card is sharing IRQs, right-click on your My Computer icon on the desktop, choose Properties, then choose the Device Manager tab, and double click on Computer on the top of the list ... you will see the IRQ assignments, so check which IRQ your network card is on and if there are any devices sharing the same IRQ number...

Unfortunately, there is no reliable way of changing IRQs except opening the computer and moving the network card to a different slot...

Stick around for some suggestions on your problem...

I actually checked the IRQs in the BIOS at boot up. This may not work with all BIOSs out there though.
