Webcam/Audio conversation

My wife (USA) and her friend (Czech Republic) are attempting to conduct audio/video conversation using MS Messenger. The video portion is working. (It's a choppy but I understand that that is expected.) The audio portion does NOT work. Both sides are running Windows XP Home. Both sides have tested both microphone and speakers using "test hardware" within Windows and these are working. At least one side is running ZoneAlarm firewall -- but it is configured to allow MS Messenger to access and act as server.

Any ideas on how to get the audio portion working?

MSNm never works for me either.... and the aim is kinda defunct. Try yahoo messager, I use it with my clan all the time and the only time it sucks is when the servers down
